 BEST MOTOR
I am about to purchase a 1854 or 1860 Excel Shallow Water F4 duck boat. I need a mud motor that will push this size boat. What should I get? I was thinking about the Mud Buddy 45, but I don't know.

 Re: BEST MOTOR
To save you an ass chewin, go back to the reviews section and read what they've already wrote. Next, if possible, go to the dealers and take a test run. That way you can make your own decision. In my personal opinion, why buy the 45 Van Guard MB, which is a modded 35, when you can buy the stock 40 Kohler and buid off it fo even more hp? Good luck, now get ready for the wrath of the MMT old heads.

 Re: BEST MOTOR
Sorry if I uprooted some people. I'm just new to the whole mud motor deal. I have always hunted with an outboard motor and it's time for something new. I had originally decided to get the 36 PD, but I didn't know if it would push an 1860 boat fast. I need hole shot power, but I don't want to mod a motor up with exhaust and all that stuff. I will be duck hunting mainly out of this boat, and don't want a loud exhaust. Plus, it would make some of the older guys who hunt the public land where I do mad, and I don't want that. I will use the search engine to find the info I need.

 Re: BEST MOTOR
duramax,
The motor you need will depend on how fast you want to go, the altitude you run at, the types of water / mud / weeds you expect to encounter and also how big of a load you intend to put in the boat. If we knew the answer to those questions there might be some more concrete help in the responses rather than all of this bullshit.
And where are you located? In my book, having either a manufacturer or a quality dealer close to you should factor into your choice of which engine to buy.

 Re: BEST MOTOR
OK. I ordered my boat yesterday. I got an Excel 1860 shallow water F4. I will be hauling at least 3 people including myself plus 3 dozen decoys, 3 mojo's, and a 60 pound dog. I want good speed because you have to have it around here so you won't get beat to the hole. I have been told to wait for the new Mud Buddy motor that comes out this summer. Suppose to have 4 gears from what I heard-- Reverse, Neutral, Low and High. If I did decide to get a motor now and not wait it would have to be a Gator Tail because of the instant reverse. I just ain't sure if it will be enough meat to push my boat

 Re: BEST MOTOR
For what it's worth, Mudbuddy has been promising a reverse feature on their motors for something like four years now and the market has not seen it yet.
Don't paint yourself in a corner, Duramax. When the season starts you don't want to still be waiting for your motor.
You can thank me later for warning you now.

 Re: BEST MOTOR
Yea, I seen where they were talking about coming out with a reverse model back in 2007 on some old threads. The rep told me he was going to Utah to test the prototype in the next month tho. Its suppose to have a shaft similiar to the Pro Drive. Its gonna be called the "Excel" too if I remember correctly. If this doesn't happen I have almost made my mind up that I am getting a Gator Tail 35 GTR. I just have to find a dealer somewhre in my area, and I hope that it will push my 1860 some good speeds.
