Put a 32HP Generac on it. Same weight as a 23HP Vanguard but with a new exhaust and carb on it with some other tweaking you would be pumping close to 40HP. the Generacs are cheap also.

is the bolt circle the same? what about gearing changes? that 32 horiz looks badass! i kinda bought the 23 over the 35 with the intention to mod it down the road to make more power with less weight. the price on that generac is hard to beat though.

Get a Generac online cheap... or if you willing to wait I know someone that can get it from the factory for cheap cheap... the wait is really dependent on if the factory is making a run anytime soon.

Post Re: Problems with brand new GTR23
my curiosty has been duly spurred. 60+ ft/lb torque at 2400?? talk about pushing a load. This thing supposedly weighs 119# according to my forum search, which is basically for all intents the same weight as the 23. If its true the block and internals have been cast better then drake1's idea of carbing it up would turn my rig into an all out beast. How would one go about wiring up the electrical clutch to the ignition as per GT's factory setup. Do you think Hoyt would be willing to pull the old off and put the new on and get it all rigged up? I'd for sure need the flat top air filter to fit under my poling platform. What kind of top end speeds are we looking at for this motor on the 23's gearing and frame? Would new gears be in order? how about propping? I have an 11x10 on there right now so would I need to pitch up to make the most from this thing?

I thought i'd go ahead and update even though this is bringing this post from the dead...

I got Lenco tabs installed on the boat and it runs great now. Deep water: 20 @ 3500 with me (260#) 18-19 at 3480-3490 with two and gear. When I disengage the tabs, the bow really comes up high and the boat slows. I put the tabs back down, the bow goes down and the revvs seriously pick up. I still get a little pickup in shallow water due to the extreme lift that the tabs can't provide but this thing gets it done now. This is about what i expected from a 23.

should of went Generac and you could of sold your 23hp engine to recoup some of the cost you were out on a new engine... may even recoup the entire cost since Generac is a cheap cheap engine..

Post Re: Problems with brand new GTR23
Finally got the url for the photos up on the previous post, if ya'll want to see my trim tab solution for better performance. That's a cypress skiff I built with a GTR23 stock, and a product called "Smart Tabs". These are compression tabs, not hydraulic or electric, and they adjust automatically with pressure. They help tremendously with hole shot and attitude of plane once on step. When at rest the are all the way down, but when on step they level out. One can actually steer the boat by leaning left or right and the trim tabs will adjust and turn the boat without changing motor direction..pretty neat. The only concern I have is what happens when I'm in mud and have to revers? The tabs will dig, so I'm installing as we speak a device to manually lift and position them in the upright position if I need to. Nothing high tech just a stiff bungee chord. Here's the URL for the photos again:

Here's where you get them:

Post Re: Problems with brand new GTR23
I thought long and hard about the generac and talked to a lot of people about it and it'd have to be something for down the line. I talked to someone who is very knowledgable in mud motors and told me about the disposability of the generacs. He said that they are great engines but are made to be changed out if any problems occur. The boat needed tabs anyways as it rides very bow high even with sufficient power. I looked into smart tabs but decided to go with electrics so that they could be picked up in the shallows. I tried it alll so far, shallow water, mud, shallow reverse and mud reverse and the tabs and boat perform great. I think when this motor goes out I will switch to generac but I will stick with this motor for now. I already have one 23 block still sitting in my garage that only has 80 hrs and the last thing I need is another. I was considering using the motor I have sitting around as a donor for a set of heads, cam and a carb to be machined shaved and ground to be put into the new motor. How much do you think a 2002 block with 80 hours is worth anyways?
