Thanks for the great article. I got mine built...no problems so far. They are exactly what i've been looking for. I used the Vision X VX-4411 fixtures (flood light) and the Xentec Ultra Slim Ballast (round).

You'd be infringing on Vision X's patent if you did that since they market the same versions of these lights in HID instead of Halogen. All it'd take is one person that you sell these lights to to contact Vision X for some warranty work and you're done.

A member here just pointed out to me that the ballast I used to build these lights are no longer available. They have an updated version of them now that might work but I'm not entirely sure. So if one of you guys decides to build a pair with the new style ballast, please let us know. Thanks.

Now that the original kit is not available anymore, has anyone found something similar that will work?

Here's the dimensions for the slim ballast is 3” * 2.5” * 0.5”
Anybody know if this will work with the Vision X VX-4410 Halogen Euro Beam Off Road Light??

Blazeman, not a bother at all, triton22 has confirmed that the Xentec ballast in the picture you posted will work. I haven't tried building any lights with those ballasts so I'm taking his word for it but I'm fairly certain they will. Just remember that the 5000k lights are the brightest and all the other temperatures are for "looks".

When you pay the seller, just send him a note WITH YOUR PAYMENT ON PAYPAL that you want H3 5000k bulbs.

One more thing, If I had to build lights for my duck boat again, I'd go with two floods instead of the Euro Beams but it's all personal preference.

I built a set of those lights with the new style ballast. The lights went together just like the tutorial said, but it was a very tight fit and took a little playing with to get it right.

Agree with Chessies, the fit is VERY tight. The first one took a while to get the fit just right, second one went right together.

I got them mounted and wired tonight, planning some catfishing this weekend and will be able to try them out then.

They look good on the boat.

Post Re: How To Build Two HID Lights For Under $100
Well.......I have all parts in hand. I've got the bulbs switched out and have gone as far as I can go until I borrow my buddies dremel later this week.

Chico's set lasted the whole year without any issues. Durability must be very good when built to his instructions. I just can't help but wonder, if the ballast were remote mounted, would it be a better end result. It would certainly be cooler with more ventilation and not being in such tight quarters. You also wouldn't have to use a dremel and then use the trial and error approach to get them to fit.

I guess what I'm saying is (While I wait patiently for a dremel to arrive) what if you mounted the ballast inside your light bar? It would be enclosed in your metal tubing right below your lights. You'd have to drill an access hole for your electrical wires but you could drill the hole on the bottom and then silicone any openings when completely wired. Guess I just have time to think as I wait and I'm doing my thinking out loud. Any opinions??

If I had to do it over again, I'd probably go with 2 eurobeams as opposed to the 1 flood -1 euro I have now. The reason is because the euros throw a focused beam outward for driving and also flood horizontally. IMO there is really no reason for the floods with a euro. I'm basing my opinion on just using them for driving to the duck blind.

Under the "anything worth doing is worth overdoing" category.. I added a third light to my Gator trax light bar! Three fit nicely in the light bar. You just have to redrill the holes. I'm running a horizontal flood on each side and a Eurobeam in the center. I'll test it tonight if I get a chance and give a report. I'll also post up a pick of it.

This may be a stupid question, but do you think you could put one of these HID bulbs in a golight? I have the stanchion mount gobee and it would be awesome if I could make it brighter and draw less power.

Some guy here alreadt did that. Do a search for HID golight and it should pop up. I think he had some sort of problem with the mechanism jamming up on him.

I fired it up last night and it worked well. I haven't had a chance to put it in the marsh yet. Here's a bad cell phone pic showing the lights fitted in the gator trax light bar. a flood on each side and a eurobeam in the center. No smart comments on my garage wall color. It was that way when I bought the house and I haven't had a chance to repaint it...

Carey, make sure you increase the size of the wires supplying the power to your lights. That coiled plug that came with the GT lights is like 22 gauge and too skinny to feed 3 lights so you might end up with a burnt out ballast.

This is an awsome write up, great job chico. I plan on doing what Carey did to my next boat, would make getting to the blind with thousands of stumps in between the landing a blind a whole lot easier for sure.

Post Re: How To Build Two HID Lights For Under $100
Just wanted to say thanks. I came on here looking for a mud motor for when I get home from overseas this spring and I found this thread.

The lights we currently have on our vehicles over here suck ass, even with 8-10 up front.. Being "scout truck" or the truck out ahead of the convoy a half mile or more it is our job to find the shit on the side of the road that is going to harm us or our trucks we are escorting. It is not easy with lights that only go out 40' when traveling at 30-40mph.

We were looking into getting some HID's for our truck(out of pocket) but the cheapest ones I found were $100 each.

I ordered a couple Euro lights and the H3 5000K lights(whoops forgot to specify which lights...)

I think these will be a huge asset to us and just wanted to thank Chico for the How to Do post!!

Thanks Chico!!!

g23, you just blew me away with your post! I created these lights so the guys on here could have HID's for about half the cost of anyone else's on the market but, I never imagined someone would put them to use on our Troops trucks! I'm honored that you did and if you need any help putting them together, please let me know. Thanks for the post!

Post Re: How To Build Two HID Lights For Under $100
I built a set today using the new ballasts and they came together just the same as my first set of instructions using the round ballasts. After some trial and error, the picture below shows how I was able to get everything to fit. So when placing the ballast in the housing, make sure that the power cables are pointed in an upward angle facing towards the right and the rear of the ballast is touching the back of the housing and facing towards the left. Then place the plug connections behind the ballast and route the wires to the front. There was a little pressure when closing but nothing that should distort the housing.

Built mine yesterday and installed them today. How bright are these things really? Its not dark yet but I can't wait to see them in the dark. Am I still going to need my qbeam while I am running? I got two of the euro beam with the 6000K, couldn't find the 5000K version.
