 Re: excel boats
to me your best bet is matching the boat from the motor manufacturer or if you can afford it, get a custom built so that it is exactly the way you want it, you never can go wrong with a custom builder, especially the ones they have on this site.

 Re: excel boats
I run an 1851. I've run several 1754's (all Excel). I had the first 1851 flat nose prototype. I like Excel. I believe the fit and finish of their boats is unmatched. I have become friends with Tim Scott who started Excel. We had a rough start with a bad boat and a promise to make it right that took some time to get to.
I gave up on Excel thinking I was stuck because they were on the verge of BK. But, Tim gave me his word that he would make it right. I quit askin' and he quit callin'/ Then one day, out of the blue, he calls me and tells me my new boat is ready. I meet him and we swap. I gave my input on a few boats since then. I bitched, he listened. The 1754's were too heavy.....nice boats, but heavy.....still are. The 1851's are lighter and more nimble. I like them a lot. They aren't the fastest but they handle good and are finished out nicer than any boat out there (IMHO). ***** Foreman now has controllling interest in the company. Me and him don't see eye to eye, or, at least, have had our differences in the past. I don't know that I will do business with them again because of that. But, I will stand on K.P.'s coffee table and tell him what a hell of a boat Excel makes.
I ran 27-28 with a stock 36 on an 1851 and run 28-29 with a Stage I kit.....probably broke 30 down in La. as my rig always runs better when I'm down there.

 Re: excel boats
Maybe things have changed as of late, but my new Excel F4 in a 1754 is almost 175lbs lighter than my old PD X1 in a 1654. And the Excel has full flotation while the X1 had none. Do they make them lighter these days than they used to? I liked my PD but this boat moves much better, turns better, and is faster. I dunno, maybe I am the beneficiary of a lighter Excel than what you guys are seeing down there.

 Re: excel boats
Cant really speak about the F4 but I had a 1754 MWE that was a slug! it was overpriced and underperformed. It didnt carry a load very good, Most of all, I wouldnt buy another one due to the service i recieved from them. I wont go into detail but it was bad enough to make me sell it and never buy another one.

 Re: excel boats
I'm going to interject. What was said was that excell boats are slower than most other boats, to me that implies that if you took a 18' excell and an 18' whatever with just for arguments sake a 36 pro-drive, that the 18' whatever will probably outrun the excell. If you got a motor that is doing 5100 rpm's and pushing you 36mph.... well put that motor on a pro-drive boat or a gatortail or a uncle j or a brother boat and you might end up going 42mph. That being said excell makes an extremely fine and comfortable looking boat and if I had a million bucks in my bank account I would probably buy one. On a positive note they might run faster than a gatortrax.

 Re: excel boats
I thinks I will let it go on the speed of the Excel but I will say that Excel is building a nice and will made boat so for the one that started the post go look at one and test run one and you will make the call after all you are the one that has to put out the $$$.
