Faced with a 3500 mile haul back to Maine in a couple weeks, I decided I check my wheel bearings even though I did them last fall. Good thing I did! Both sides leaked and the grease was all milked up and the bearings had some discoloration from rust on them.

I tossed all the crap and installed new bearings and seals and packed it good with CRC Marine grease. I installed bearing buddies and bras. Good to go now!

I've never had a trailer do this before, but this one came with a different cap with a rubber access plug. This axle has a zirc on the end that puts grease between the bearings which looked like a good idea until I found out that it didn't perform too well for me.

Anyway, it's back to bearing buddies for me.

The grease fitting greases the axle from the inside out... The rubber gasket that you remove to gain access to grease fitting is the same thing the buddy bearing does...

You can actually put the whole hub assembly on the axle without the bearings being packed and literally pump grease into the fitting until its coming out towards you...

This is what McClain tells me to do anyhow I still pack my bearing but do follow their keep pumping until grease is coming out mentality.

Be careful with buddy bearings they can fail should you pump to much grease in.

If I were you I would have stuck with the Accu-lubes. I agree with Westendangler because most people tend to fill the Buddy Bearings all the way and when the grease expands on the road the seals usually start leaking. Do not fill the Buddy Bearings all the way. I will never go back to Buddy Bearings after having Accu-lube. No need to repack, just pump grease until until the new one starts coming out and no need to worry about over packing. I have oil filled hubs on the Ranger trailer and thats the shit. You dont have to touch them for 20,000 miles.

The EZ lube axle is the shiznit... WEA and Kibb got it right. POKER1 suggested carrying and spare hub assembly, Probably the BEST advice to take. It sucks having to pack bearings on the side of the road at 8:00 PM in the sticks. I been there.

I'm going to take that advice about the spare hub assembly! No need to end up in the middle of bumfuq Wyoming laying on the side of the road with the snakes and scorpions for an hour of bearing packing by flashlight!! No thanks! Brand new Marathon tires on the trailer and a good spare just in case.

Forgot to add, the plug you spoke about does need changing every now and then. I noticed water in one of my bearings one time. All I did is fill until new grease came out and install a new plug. They do crack, I guess from expanding and contracting alot. They are about $0.90 a piece.

Found a new hub for a spare at Sportman's Guide for 44.95 Comes already packed, with bearings, seal, and even lug nuts. Ordered one yesterday!
3500 miles is a long tow but I think it's as road ready as I can make it.

If you don't bring an extra hub, and plan on rebuilding with parts, a few things you might add: hand cleaner, several clean rags, brake cleaner (2 cans), and don't forget an axle nut and cottar key* (they sometimes come off when everything comes apart).
*Thought we had everything until we had to rebuild a trailer wheel on the side of a street in an Ensenada, Mexico slum outside a marine parts store that had one last axle nut.
