Post Boat/Motor trouble. Please help! GTR35...
Not sure if this is the right spot, but am new to the site and need some guidance.

I have a buddy who has a stock GTR35 on a stock 1756 G3 (remote steering, mod-V, double floors, sidewalls, front/back decks, .100 alum... heavy boat) and we are having trouble getting the boat to plane (get on top). We have gotten it to plane every once in a while, and if it does will take 60-90 seconds, but consistanly have trouble to get it to max rpm's (38-3900) and the majority of the time it will only plow water. We can run side by side with another GTR35 with a simular size boat and have considerably worse performance. Have tried messing with weight distribution, tune up, and shallow/deep water but are still having the same problem.

My question is "What is the problem???" Is it simply too heavy of a boat? (Is rated for twice the HP) Should we mess with the pitch/diameter of the prop? Angle of transom? Perhaps something with the motor itself is not correct? Maybe a "start-up procedure" that we need to follow to get it on plane.

I have been running outboards since birth (24 years now), but am new to mud motors and was told that you guys are the best at figuring out problems and having the best solution. Please help and let me know what yall suggestion is.

Thanks

my guess would be the weight of the boat---possibly look at mods for the motor or adding another.
good luck

Indon think it's the weight of the boat. What size transom motor do u have? How tall is the transom of the boat? What hole r u running on the motor?

We tried the different holes, moved the pin up and down, and it went from bad to worse. The boat has a 20" transom and I'm assuming the motor is made for this size. The prop and bottom shaft does not extend past the bottom of the boat, but this is as low as it can be mounted (without taking a saw or torch to transom). I believe it's mounted at the right height, when it's trimed up the prop is right under the water, but then again I don't know...

Lots of people on here run boats heavier than dat so weight is probably not your problem. Sounds like da boat bein a v bottom is your problem theese things are made to run on flat bottom boats.

Only half of the prop is in the water at top speed and WOT, but getting to that point is the hard part. When we take off from idle it is usually fully submerged, should it not be this way?

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.

doubt the problem is the motor or the weight of the boat, but it could be.... most likely its just the style of the boat you are trying to run it on along with the angle of the transom could be wrong. but if you have the opportunity, put that motor on a different boat that is designed for a mud-motor and see how it performs. therefore you can be sure that the motor isn't the problem and eliminate a variable.

The angle of the transom would have to be extremely rediculous for your motor to not work. The only reason Gator Tail has that much angle in their boats transom is so the motor can trim down really far to dig out of mud. My boat was built for an outboard. It had a Pro Drive on it and now a GTR. I can trim all the way up or all the way down and still take off from a dead stop with no problem. As far as weight being the issue, my boat is 19x42 and I can run with 4 adults and 4 kids with 2 ice chest and a generator and still plane out good. Im not sure what your problem is but I hope you get it figured out. Is the prop worn bad?

The mod V hull is the issue. These engines perform the best of a flat bottom hull. Sure some people get mediocre performance from a mod v hull but the best is acheived from a flatboat.

You need a flat bottomed boat.
