Post Boat/motor registration in Texas
Do you have to have the title of the motor and the boat for registation or the title on the boat good enough?

The boat needs to have a title to get TX numbers... Often when
a boat comes from another state where they do not use titles a new
title will be created for the boat... You can get the boat TX numbers
without registering a motor - but...

Motors over 5 hp fall under similar rules...

When buying try to get signatures on the transfer forms(143) and limited
power of attorney(1055) for transfer as well as bill of sale --- then you can
have titles duplicated or issued and sign for the prior owner if need be
using the limited power of attorney... And of course pay the sales taxes
and fees --- which is what the State really wants...

Yes you do. Don't know how much the motor thing is enforced though because your not going to get a card for your wallet like you will for the boat.

I have bought motors from LA where they don't have titles
and it is no problem to have one created here in Texas...

But...

I would pass on buying from a TX seller if he did not have
the title - because - you will have trouble getting the signatures
from the prior owners and paying the taxes and penalties for the
prior sales in TX... Which would be required to get title in your name...

LA has optional titles now if you own the boat outright.... if you finance a new boat you are required to get a title...
