I don't know what it is but, anytime a mallard is within range something happens and I cannot put one in the water. EVERY TIME! I don't hunt as much as most of you but I get to go on the weekends usually. I've only been duck hunting a couple of years. The only duck I've not been able to kill is a mallard(other than ducks I've never seen). Everything else, no problem. Something always goes wrong for me when they are close. Yesterday we had a greenhead hovering above the decoys 6 ft off the water 35 yards out. My buddy let me have first shot because he knows something always happens to me when there is one in range. Sure enough the trigger stuck on me and he escaped. I guess in a way it adds some excitement because there is pressure every time I see one. So that is why a mallard is my Unicorn. **EDIT - Someone please move this to the hunting and fishing forum. I don't know why in the hell I posted it in cyber mudfest, thanks in advance** |

Our unicorn is a Goldeneye. We know where they are and we have set up on them. They are smart as hell. We have even had one land in our decoys and when we shoot they dive. Then pop back up and we shoot again and they dive. We're going after them again in January and hopefully nail one of these little ducks. |

I think mine would be a pintail drake. I've only had two chances. It seems on both occasions I was too excited and like a virgin on prom night, shot without really aiming. ![]() |

The way we kill goldies is just use about 10 goldeneye decoys nothing else. Put the in a long line across the wind so the birds can't have that tail wind behind them. They're fast, big, super tough, one of the smartest and wariest ducks out there, and HATE other ducks. You will rarely ever see them with another duck, especially around here. Try about 10 to 15 goldeneye deeks on a long line and start them at your boat and run the weight out slightly across and upwind. Be ready, they're going to scream by you and when they do hit the water be ready to chase a cripple. |

My unicorn is a fully plumed drake widgeon, pintail, or blue wing teal. Had 5 widgeons land 50 yards outside the decoys this morning. I was giddy as a dayum school girl and nothing I could do about it. |

I'll swap you a stringer full of Alabama mallards for a couple of those Texas Redheads and Pintails. |

Mine is the Canvasback. I've seen a few of them taken here in Utah, but never dropped the hammer on one myself. I would LOOOOOOVE to bust one them. other than that, a drake wood duck (which dont come through here) or some snow geese.. but mostly just the Can. |
