Hey guys, got a question. I'm sure this has been discussed on the old board, but I'm too lazy to search. My lower unit on my PD is leakin pretty good. It was just a little, but now the outside of the gearbox has an oily sheen from the last trip out. PD changed it a couple years ago, but I had other things needin done, so I had the seal changed while they were into it. Thinkin bout doin it myself this time. I haven't looked at it real close. Is this a big job for the average shadetree guy, or no big deal?? |

hey bombdude, it's not hard to change. the lower seal is probly the culprit. u can change them easy. 1. just pull the prop. 2. pull the big nut looking at u. 3. look inside the "big nut" and replace the 3 seals. be sure to face them the way u pulled them out. 4. flushout the lower unit while u have the bottom seals out. then.... reinstall big nut and neverseize the crap outta the prop and prop sleve then replace prop and then fill gearcase wif oil to proper level. it will take longer to flush the gearbox than anything else. bout a 3 beer job. p.s. the lake is stupid low right now, maybe come on down in a few weeks and lets go muddin. |

Is it the upper or lower. The upper is where the knuckle swivels. |

I'm afraid it's both. I can see oil on the skeg from the lower. But the outside of the gearbox has an oily sheen like it's comin from the top & smeared it from runnin' in the water. That's what I'm guessin' anyway. Joel, thanks for the offer, bud. Just talkin' with Trevor yesterday that it's been WAY too long since we been down there. We'll hook up soon. |

Do you have water in the oil? That sheen on the gearbox could be from greese.Check the oil and see if it is milky. |

Yep, replaced mine in the dark a few weeks ago. No problem. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a breather that will allow fluid to escape out the top if the lower seal is compromised? That should be what you are seeing. |
