Post Making a grab, need some advice
hey guys im gonna be making a grab bar for my boat within a week or so and just wanting to get yalls opinion on my idea and ways to make it better. i was thinking of making the bar out of 1/2in emt bent in a C shape like most grab bars. for the base i was just gonna get some thin sheet metal and weld 2 3/8 pieces of emt to it so the bar will slid over them, then drill two holes and use some pins to hold it in place. this would allow the bar to be taken out when hunting or fishing. how does this sound? if anyone else has made one and made it differently id like to get some ideas from yall. thanks guys

, 1/2 inch emt is not gonna be strong at all. youre gonna bend it over the first time you really pull on it

1/2" EMT? Sounds like ya gonna bust ya azz, that's how it sounds. Ya better make it outta something stronger than that for sure. More along the lines of 3/4" or 1" aluminum pipe. Even 1-1/2" aluminum conduit will bend very easily, & that's the last thing ya want your grab bar to do. This is one project ya don't want to skimp on, unless ya like bustin ya azz.

thats exactly why i posted this hahaha. thanks for the input.
camo so you think if i do 1 in aluminum pipe for the bar and 3/4 for the mount it would be rigid enough.
does the idea itself sound good though?

I've used 1" emt and it worked pretty good but it was on my gunbox so it was only about 20" tall. Plus emt will rust

I'd use 1" for the grab bar & weld (2) 6" tall pices of 1-1/4" to the floor to insert it into & pin it like ya said.

Make it a comfortable height for you when standing up. Steel pipe is gonna rust, but that would probably work.

Use emt from lowes. It's steel and galvanized so it helps with the rust issue

1" aluminum pipe bent around a 14" car wheel.

   [album][/album]this is an adjustable seat post with the base and a handle from a power tool..improvise..if you can mount a seat base on your floor then you can do what you want.
