I've got a pic that i'd like to use for my avatar, but its too large. I resized it to the pixel size i needed, but it still says that the file is too large. Can someone help me?

Got my IT talented son to work on mine. Keeps telling him to re-size. When we do that, the pics come out grainy and don't look good. How are all the guy's with the vids and good pics doing it :?: :?: :?:
