First off, I am new to the site. I have been visiting the site for a year or so but decided I should join in. I am wanting to know what y'all think. I have a 18hp Copperhead on a 16x50 xpress flat bottom. I am very pleased with the performance when I am running very light loads. (24 by myself) (22 with 2 people) (18 with 3 People)- these are speeds without hunting loads. My problem is when I get it loaded down with hunters, deeks, bamboo, guns, etc. it really bogs down the 18. I would like to get the biggest motor my boat will handle, my boat is rated for a 30hp so I am looking at a 27 PD. Question is, would a 27 PD out perform a 18 Copperhead? * I know a slick bottom 17ft boat would do better - I just cant afford it right now. |

Adding that much more horsepower should make a difference, especially on loads. |

I run a 31 (which is the same block as a 35) on a 1648 with a 16" transom with no problems. No water ever swamped the boat on a dead stop either. Go with the 35! |

I would love to go with the 36 PD. For those of you that are running the big block on the 16ft boat, are you happy with the way it performs? |

I ran a 36 PD on a 1652 Alweld short transom for over a year, and it performed pretty good. It would basically run the same speeds as a true mud hull, other than with a load, which you lose a couple mph. The only time you'll have an issue with water coming over the back is on a very steep launch or if you suddenly stop when reversing at a good speed. I've never had an issue with water coming over the back from suddenly stopping in forward, it was awfully close but never swamped over. |

Thing about a short transom is you climb a stump and you're taking on water in the back then you're done. |

I ran a 27 pd on a 16-44 go devil for a while and didn't like it at all. Put a 36 on it and it ran really well. I would def. build the transom up and go with a big block. |

You will get more performance out of a pro drive simply because it is a surface drive not a longtail. I would look into a Go-devil SD27 |

I run a 27 PD on a 1638 skiff. You can load them down with 3 guys and a hunt load , you just have to take your time. |
