Just curious of average speeds of 36 PD. Just purchased it and put it on my 16' x 48" with 24" sides bateau. It has a long rake and a 45 degree angle cut on the transom. I had approximately 600 lbs in the boat when I ran it and my average speed was 23 mph on GPS. This was in deep water. Boat built by Elwood Scully for a long tail 5 years ago. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Something doesn't sound right.
Pic of boat would be nice.
Did you try moving weight around in the boat?
Condition of prop?
Hooks in boat hull?

Prop is in good condition and I tried moving weight around. No hooks in the hull. Coondik is going to take it out and run it for me, but I've been working a lot and haven't gotten around to it. I will post pictures tomorrow. It was depressing seeing that speed on GPS.

TACMC,

I have a custom made 16 x48 bateau with 21inch sides and an 18 gallon built in tank that would proabably weigh about the same as your boat or a Prodrive boat with a bone stock PD36. By myself with minimal gear and no choppy water, deep, I can hold 29mph. With another guy, gear, and ice chests etc, I can hold 26mph.

If you are certain that you were totin' 600 # of stuff the other day, I would say 23mph in a 16X48 is nothing to complain about. If you figure 600 pounds, that could be 3 guys including the driver and some gear. In my opinion dat ain't bad speed.

Now, you could check your governor setting because you should be able to turn pretty close to 4000 rpms unless the 3900 rpm was a more comfortable tiller torque for you.

If you have trim tabs check that as well. I had mine bent a little too far down and it affected my speeds. Found a happy medium for running a load and keeping the porpoise off the front and the speed is much better.

Now I wonder if Scully built your boat, you may have a heavier gauge aluminum than 1/8th. Most factory mudboats are totin' 1/8th throughout. You may have a heavier bottom, or your whole boat maybe be more than 1/8th. If that is the case then your boat is heavier in gneral. You could even have a double bottom.

Sometimes everybody including myself gets hung up on deep water speeds. And rightly so, but how does your set-u perform in the shallow stuff?
