Ms river was so high all year that the fresh water going into the marsh has fukd up all the feed for them. If any come down they won't stay. May as well hunt doves & fish.

Last year I heard it was the opposite. The river was so low that the salt water intrusion killed all the vegetation. Guess I will have to stick to the rice ponds this teal season and pecan island

Guess ill be goin to the wax lol. That sux about Venice. Bc when the birds are there that is arguably one of the best places to hunt in the state.

Fi started duck Huntin about 7 years ago and Venice was the first place I went. My buddy told me how you could only shoot 2 pintail and one canvas back at the time. And I was wondering why bc that was literally all we were seeing down there and wigeon. So I kept wondering why there was a limit like that on those birds. Then I hunted in other parts of the state and figured out why real quick. Lol

Since the teal season is going to suck, I may just do a little bass fishing around Henderson. ..& wear my favorite big YELLOW RAIN COAT.

Post subject:  Re: Teal jn Venice

Teal have not made it down there yet (as of last weekend).....However, the feed and grass have returned. Ponds are stuffed with grass and feed compared to last year. High water was great for the area this summer. Barring any tropical storms/ hurricanes forming, this will be a great year. Last year was by far the worst down in Venice since I first hunted there in '86. Teal season last year was basically a wash due to the storm hitting two weeks prior to teal season. We shot a few ducks last year, but for most of the season, the birds were concentrated in the Joseph's bayou area. Birds would arrive and stay maybe one or two days and move on.

toledo and rayburn hold a lot of teal all season...tawakini and cooper and the dallas are lakes hold them all season too... last year after the split i saw the largest raft of teal on tawakini i have ever seen..... it looked like 50000 drake greenwings...im sure there were hens but the drakes dominated the population.

Iv'e hunted venice for many years and when fishing/scouting we are always seeing lots of teal by now but I haven't seen much this year. Looks like its going to be a nother bummer of a year just like last year we are going over to Lake Charles for the opener I hear from a buddy that they are stacked up over there in South West, LA.

I'd give it another week or two. We should start seeing them by labor day weekend. If we don't, I'd start to worry. We were hit with a double whammy last year; low river plus the slow moving hurricane that pushed all of the ducks out, and killed all of the grass. The teal never returned. Then the low river prevented anything from growing back for duck season.

The best bet this year is definately gonna be the western part of the state the further west you can get the better. I wont be wasting all that gas going way down to Venice when all the ducks are heading the other way.
