hey guys, just bought my first surface drive motor....27hp prodrive on a 1644 flat. wondering what i can exspect out of the motor? what rpm should it run under a load and in neutral? Also wondering what props everyone is using? do they make a 3 blade for this unit and how has it performed if so. I noticed a huge drop in speed with 3 people in the boat and wondering if i can do something to pick up the lost speed with the extra guy in boat. any advice is appreciated |

A longer hull would help maintain speed when runnign a third guy. Plenty of proven mods available for the 27 also, check out the mini puller sites. |

I don't understand why everyone automatically says "GET MODS!" I think that's bad advice for a guy who just purchased his first mud motor! how about some advice on how to make his current setup work?????? what rpm's are you turning out of the water? |

thanks for all the advice guys. went play around with boat today....had a blast. topped out at 24.3 in a canal by myself. ran about 3500-3600 rpms. went in marsh where the water was a little higher than usual with one other guy and ran great for what i need. that third person just completly changes the speed. running 1500 at an idle?? is that wheree i need to be? the throtle seems a little sticky to me. called PD before i ran it and said that they do make a 3 blade to help out with the load? wondering if its worth it and just how much more should i exspect out of it |

i can get 4000 out of the water. will that 3 blade provide better wholeshot? |

Post subject: | Re: 27 PD |
you need to be turning atleast 4200 out of the water, and 3900 while you're in the water and trimmed properly. sounds like you still need to turn it up some... as far as the third person killing your speed, where are your passengers sitting? I know in my boat, a third guy who sits on the front deck will kill speed really quick. make sure they're both sitting in the middle of the boat. |

every boat is different... but that may very well be your problem with the 3 guy thing... get another bucket, make him sit in the middle, and get back to us and tell us if that made a difference. |

I bought a new prodrive 27 about a month ago and it came with a 3 bladed prop. KP told me to set it up for 4250 rpm in the yard and that would shake out at about 3750 on the water. It did!! My idle came through at about 1050 and I perked that up to 1200, Runs better and doesn't stall when you come off it and it idles down. I changed out my plugs from the Champions that came with it to a set of NGK Iridiums. Call me crazy but It runs a lot smoother and is more responsive with those plugs in it. |

I just put a lowrance hds7 GPS unit on it and haven't had it out for a time trial yet. I ran it before I got the GPS on it and it seemed pretty quick but that's all relative to how tight a slough you're in. I'll get it out for a GPS run this weekend and post up. It's on a G3, 1652 boat, SSC converted to a tiller. Still have gas tank and battery in the back. I've added about 100 pounds of lead to the bow locker to balance the boat better. I have a 27 PD on a 1754 center console with a 2 blade prop. No get up on plane with 3 folks in it. Does good with 2. What NGK Iridium plug would you recommend? How much is a three blade prop? Thanks, |

shepabs, that G3 is one tough boat! I had a 1548 G3 with a 23 GDSD and I run Maurepas swamp. No hooks on the bottom. Tough boat! ![]() |

I'm finding that out mcnemar1982, I've been powering it over logs and it's pretty cool. At the end of the slough where I head out onto the salt there's a log that's probably 80 feet long and 4 feet in diameter at the stump end. It's jammed up at a curve so you have to cross it twice as you go around the corner. Really fun to just power over it and keep going where everyone else has to stop.. |
