Figure I would try my hand at building a sd. Going to either put a 6hp or 10hp on it. Probably going to take a while because I'm just working on it little at a time. Everything will be made out of 3/16 5086 alum (all scraps off a boat).

Here's where I am now. I have the belt housing built and part of the transom mount.

Looks good! Bit of advice even though your just putting a 10hp motor on it if you even decide to go to a bigger hp motor go as thick as possible and main stress points(transom bracket) I've never built one, but I did have a Dixie mm and they went think on aluminum on main stress points and caused me to have tons of problems. Broken welds snapped prices of aluminum.

Well I decided to do the pivot points out of some steel hinges I had. I hated to do it like this but I didn't fell like buying 20' of pipe and rod to build a 6" hinge. And I know this will last alot longer than the alum.

That's definitely a different way to go about the pivot.

Don't see why it won't work though!

Anyone have an idea on a motor? Want something cheap. I can get a 10hp LCT for around 200 but don't know much about them. I'm building a lt with a 6hp briggs too so I thought about briggs.

Anyone have anything bad to say about LCT?

They are built just like a Honda, some people swear by them.

The boy I got the motor without a gas tank said it had a little knock in it. Well come to find out the connecting rod bots backed out about a 1/4 in. Messed the crank and the conn rod bearings up pretty good. I guess I will build this one up for higher hp!! Other motor runs great!

Negative. Put one of the motors on a lt frame I have. Building boats right now so I don't really know when I will be able to get to it.

But I got with my machine shop guy and got the shaft and bearing figured out though.

Anyone know what prop to run for this little motor? Going to be the same gear ratio as a copperhead. Thought about running a 9x9 or 10x8 hill.

Post subject:  Re: SD build

I have a question about the skeg.

Shouldn't it be the same distance from the shaft that the prop is or a inch or 2 bigger?

As in the prop is 10" so the tip of the skeg will be 5" from center of the shaft?
