If hes broke, tell him to buy a used PD before a Beaver Tail.

I was in cabela's the other day and over in the Marine section they had one of the Beavertails. I had not seen on up close till then, I'll tell you it looked kind of like something put togeter in someones garage. Know I say that having owned a Beavertail longtail and been pretty happy with it, but this thing seemed to need some work. I asked the sales guy how many they had sold, since I told him there didn't seem to be anyone out on the forums with them. He said one so far this year... for their store, granted up here we probably don't have as much market for them. I started talking about my pro drive and why it was so much better, he looked at me like he hadn't even heard of Prodrive. Now Cabelas typically does it right but I got to question how they arrived at that line up rather then any of the others, had to be a price point issues?

Anyhow my 2 cents save you cash.

I had a Beavertail Longtail at one time. That unit was about as simple, yet solid as it gets. The parts that I needed which were seals were easy to get, and they were pretty good to deal with.

The suraface drive is available in the 40 Kohler. What can you say about that. The Kohler is a Kohler.

I think the risk or unknown would be taking the chance with service from where you bought it.

your talking about belt driving motor, pretty simple design had to screw it up that much, unless the materials used to build all the frame and housings are junk.

save your pennies so you can get something with reverse theres alot of used motors around for decent prices now a days

My uncle had a 24 beavertail LT for quite a few years until some dirt bags stole it after Katrina, never had any issues with seals or bearings and he put alot of hours on it.

I had a 35 beavertail LT for a little over a year until I destroyed it.I'm glad that I did because that thing was wearing me out,my elbow was sore as hell for about 2 months after duck season was over.

I just saw the 27 BTSD at academy the other day,it looks like they over built a few things on it but hey you never know.

As far as the 40's go has anyone seen one other than demo's in either the mud buddy or the beavertail.I heard that kohler was holding back the release of those motors for marine service until next year.Maybe thats why some people were still waiting on their motors.

I haven't seen these motors in person so I can comment on the quality of their construction but one thing is for sure----These Beavertail surface drives don't have a lower price point. Cabela's has the 40 hp in the catalogue for a little over $6100 and boys, that ain't cheap. Remember, no reverse on these motors.

Which Cabelas you in? I work for the southern one and have witnessed 13 come into store this year. Mind you these are the ones people order and get delivered to the store. I bet some don't make it that far. Boat is junk in my opinion, but motor, come on, pretty simple design and hard to f-up a long tail. Havn't heard on surface drives, but did talk to a younger fella that put an order in for one.[/quote]

Cabelas in Rogers MN, which is why I say up here, and probably not the market as in the south, not sure where your at.

My only issue with the Beavertail longtail I had was the Kohler engine...enough said, Never go back to one of those.

As for my price point comment I was thinking maybe beavertail had the highest profit margin for Cabela's as I agree they are competitively priced, again that's speculation. Maybe cabelas never even talked to the others, again I don't know why but I find it interesting.

I will also say I had really good service and the original Beavertail crew was great to work with as they did work on my motor and boat, the original owner was a real good guy, but from what I understand Beavertail was sold to another Umbrella company but I don't recall who?

I also agree they just haven't been out long enough to even get reviews it seems. I was hoping to see someone with one jump in and give a review but I'm still waiting...

Currently working on older BT-LT with 27hp Kohler replaceing bearings in both ends of tube and seals. Shaft was shot also. Don't care for needle bearings in prop end of tube seals fail and sand works into bearing. Tearing up shaft . GD has better system, in my opinion.

i seen one yesterday at academy in houma, had a kohler, belive 37hp. never seen one in action but the frame seemed solid as hell. the box at the end of the tiller seemed a lil cheep made but i used to have a lt and ran the dog shit out of it and never had a single hikkup. not one. i know fisher doesnt own the company any more so who knows...but from the looks of it i thought it was well made. gussets were like 1/4" or maybe a lil bigger

Don't know about the boats or motors but have one of their blinds has been good for past 5 seasons. The new customers service SUCKS, have called several times left messages and specifically asked a real person that they actually call me back this time since they hadn't the three previous times, was assured that I would get a call....that was a week ago. They get no more of my money....bastards.
