Trailer PSA - Go Do This Right Now!!
Just your friendly PSA.... Go give your trailer hubs a couple shots of grease with the grease gun! Two casualties recently talked about on MMT. There are more waiting in the wings if you don't do a little PM work. I give mine a drink of grease on a pretty frequent basis....as with the rest of the PD. If you're on a long trip, stop every so often and go put your hands on the trailer hubs. If they are too hot to touch...you have problems. Look at the color of your hub...if the paint looks like it has been burned off....you have problems. If you have a floor jack handy, lift the tires off the ground and give them a little push/pull and see if there is any play or any wobble. If so...you have problems.

Re: Trailer PSA - Go Do This Right Now!!
I actually brought the grease gun to Montegut and greased them before we left. The last split of duck season I let my cousin take my boat hunting to Rayburn and he said he had to change out the bearings. Apparently they weren't installed correctly... (tire rolls by)

Re: Trailer PSA - Go Do This Right Now!!
watched a friend, who didnt have a clue, change the front wheel bearings on an old blazer. got there as he was putting it back together. he had dropped the bearings into the hub and hammered the races on the outer sides. he kept attempting to set the preload but they would never tighten up. i pulled it apart and found what he had done. it was a bitch but i managed to get the races out with out destroying the bearings.
i asked him who took it apart. he did but was in a hurry a few days earlier and didnt pay attention or remember. poor guy just had no mechanical ability.
most would say bearings are pretty simple but for this guy it was a big under taking. guess the reason for the story is two fold. 1-not everyone has the same ability. and 2- with digital cameras and phone cameras it doesnt hurt to take a few pictures as you take something unfimilar apart.

Re: Trailer PSA - Go Do This Right Now!!
Great Advice BlueShamu!
Other hard learned trailer tips: Never re-use cotter pins or locking tab washers when servicing bearings!
Only use double lipped spring loaded seals.
Carrying spare bearings, seals, and races is old school. Carry a loaded spindle ready to go instead!
If you carry the spares to service a bearing on the roadside, be sure to also carry a file and some emery cloth. Seldom does a bearing commit suicide that it doesn't leave it's mark on the spindle on the way out. You may have to slick that sucker back up!
No seize on trailer lugs, followed by a liberal application of CRC corrosion inhibitor can certainly ease the pain of a roadside tire replacement. It is the next best thing to a cordless impact driver.

Re: Trailer PSA - Go Do This Right Now!!
A lot of times when there are bearing problems on hubs they are caused from wore out springs or bent axles too a lot of these trailers come with bs raggedy ass axles that can't handle loaded boats with ice chests and fuel and all the other shit we seem to load in them

Re: Trailer PSA - Go Do This Right Now!!
Switched all the trailers I own to oil bath hubs and haven't looked back. Quick glance during load up in the morning and off I go. Don't remember the cost but I had 16 hubs to buy at the time.
