Post subject:  do's and don't of painting motor
Thinking of painting my motor. It's a 2006 PD 36 with almost 90 hours on it. Has the normal wear and tear, grease, and dirt etc. as most motors do. Overall it would be cleaner than most. I was thinking of painting it one color like OD Tan to dull it out. I was thinking of having my painter who has an airless paint it for me. Just wanted to be sure of the steps I need to take to prep it, what not to paint, etc. Would you use a primer coat? I don't want to half ass it, but do it right. Thanks in advance.

just get a camo motor cover for now and then when you get ready to sell it give it a camo job so it looks new 8-)

As others said clean it good. Put tape on anything you don't want it on. I taped up a few places like the oil cooler, tach,and throttle. Then paint it up. Unless someone is doing it for free, I wouldn't pay to have it done. It's very easy. I did mine because I had the boat paint in a can and an airless sprayer from harbor Freight. Like River said, rattle can it.

med, looks good. yea, i have decided to rattle can it. ordered the reelfoot stencils yesterday and have all the colors ready to go to match my hull. i will trick it out..

Rattle canned mine flat black with regular bbq pit paint its holding up pretty good except the muffler but that was expected. Only problem was I used some green painters tape on the big sticker above the flywheel and when I peeled it off half the sticker came off with it. keep in mine lawnmower stores will laugh at you if you try buy a new sticker for it. lol
