Post subject:  I'm convinced: We are not alone in the universe

This just seals it for me. The probabilities of life, even intelligent life existing on other planets is irrefutable. I think in my lifetime we will verify intelligent life exists elsewhere in our universe. The evidence is coming in at such a pace that it won't be long now before we get the data we need to confirm. So what if there is life elsewhere? How will we react? What may change?

Hey dean have your scientists buddies found that big ass plane that went missing last month? It seems to me that they could figure out what happened to the plane if they know whats going on light years away.

Just saying:grin:

they say those planets are 500 light years away. so when we see them through our telescope we are seeing what they looked like 500 light years away. i cant do the math but is probably longer than our own planet has been alive. the furthest we have made it so far is 17 light hours away with the voyager. we launched that in 1977. if there is intelligent life other places we wont be going there any time soon. they will prob come to us first. if they already havent.

How is it irrefutable? Are you saying you have the evidence to prove intelligent life outside the earth? Because I would say it's an extremely high probability the there are plenty of intelligent life outside the earth....As an attorney you should have chosen yours words better. ;)

The high probabilities, the statistics are irrefutable. There's only a very small, infitesimal possibility that there isn't. But no one is certain there is life elsewhere.
If there is life somewhere else in the universe odds are its some extremely low form of life. Like protozoa, amoeba, or attorneys.

Though not a scientific analysis of the statistical probabilities, this explanation might put it into perspective for you: http://mycaseagainstgod.blogspot.com/20 ... tical.html

If the Milky Way contains something like 300 billion stars, then, for purposes of our statistical analysis, let's be conservative and halve that number to 150 billion stars as the average number across all 400 billion galaxies in the observable universe. (Remember, this is hardly an outlandish estimate, considering that the Andromeda galaxy hosts a trillion stars.) And let's say that every star has a single planet on average. (Again, this is an extremely conservative estimate, given that, as Popular Science quoted astronomer Seth Shostak as having said, “[T]he number of planets in the Milky Way is probably like five or 10 times the number of stars.”) So, that's 400 billion (times) 150 billion (times) one to arrive at 60,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets in the observable universe.

Let's set the odds of life ever emerging on any given planet at a million to one. In that case, life would emerge on 60,000,000,000,000,000 planets.

Let's set the odds of life ever emerging on any given planet at a billion to one. In that case, life would emerge on 60,000,000,000,000 planets.

Finally, let's set the odds of life ever emerging on any given planet at 10 billion to one. In that case, life would emerge on 6,000,000,000,000 planets. That means if the odds of life emerging are 10 billion to one, then life would emerge on about six trillion planets. As Lawrence Krauss astutely observes, "[T]he universe is big and old and, as a result, rare events happen all the time." Extraterrestrial life is a statistical certainty.

I have worked for and around a bunch of different research scientists and they have all told me that statistics don't lie, but that LIARS can use and manipulate statistics to make them appear any way they choose.

Proof of life on other planets will not be easy in light of our lack of ability to venture among the stars. Seeing things through a telescope and actually seeing things in real life are too entirely different things.

I think if GOD put life on other planets, then Jesus has already been there also. :>)

There is no other life out there because it doesn't say it in the bible. Just like there were no dinosaurs because the bible didn't say it. We didn't evolve from monkeys. The world is not billions of years old. The thing is that our race started from Adam and eve. When they had children, there children had to bang each other to have more kids, right? Or did Adam and eve bang there children?

 "Cheesehead"? I AM NOT a cheese head. I don't live in Wisconsin, I live in the lower peninsula of Michigan.

Just so you get it right: I am considered a "troll" by my yooper friends becuz I live in the southern part of the state. Us trolls live down under (South of) the big mighty Mackinaw bridge, whereas those who live in the U.P. (North of the bridge) are referred to as "yoopers" , cuz dey live in da yoopee, eh...

And they really do talk that way. And if you think you Southern boys have a hard time understanding us Northern boys, just venture to Michigan's U.P and TRY to understand what the hell they're saying.... I spend quite a bit of time up there and I sometimes have a hard time trying to decipher what they're talking about.
OCW - I was born in Mt. Pleasant MI, we still have a lot of family in MI. The Yoopers are by far the funnest to visit - but they hold grudges to the grave so as you probably know don't P. them O.
