So I hear that the copperhead motors are worth their buck? Not really looking for a larger mud motor although i would love a GTR 35 but dont have the boat for one. Does anyone have any knowladge on the copperheads and how they perform? Speeds? Reliablity? Anything. Videos and pictures of your rigs would be cool.

I've got a few friends with copperheads that are happy with them. They don't seem to have many issues and are pretty simple. They definitely perform better than the mini mud buddies due their better weight to HP ratio. How big is your hull?

Friend of mine has one on an Alweld. He is happy with it. I think his hull is a 15-40 something and he gets in the high teens to low 20s depending on weights.

Had an 18 hp copperhead, very tough and dependable.
Upgraded to GTR 25 and then a 35 GTR.
There is no replacement for displacement

Stinky, PM me your results once you run your boat if you don't mind.

OP:

I have a 23 with about 60 hrs on it now. I use it for Bowfishing, duck hunting, and fishing. Could not complain at all about it. I run it on a 1442 alumacraft. Completely empty with only gas, battery and required boat gear, I get around 28 mph. This weekend I add my 1/8 aluminum front deck, ice chest, fishing gear, seats, tackle box, fishing poles, I'm getting 25/26. I have run a short distance with 4 grown men + 2 dozen decoys and 4 guys hunting gear and we were dropped off around 15/16 MPH. I typically run with 2 people in the boat + full gear and my speeds are 23-24.

I run it in all types of stuff, deep water, heavy vegetation, straight mud, etc. As long as you know the limitations of a mudmotor without reverse, you should be alright. I am still learning those limits. lol

It was basically my only choice for my hull due to weight. I got the hull and trailer on a deal and I was on a tight budget with my build. All in all, I could not ask for more. I also wanted less than 25hp so I can run on HP restricted areas. If you are looking for a bare bones mud motor, copperhead 23 is as good as it gets, followed by GDSD (heavy).

I do find that the way the lower unit is CnC'd, that it will pick up a lot of vegetation and create drag. That is about the only thing on the design that I don't like, but out of 100, I'd give it a 98. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. Or you could always call copper head and talk to Gil, Josh or Betsy. They will never rush you off the phone and are more than happy to help you.

Have one on a 1442 alumacraft flatbottum. It does 29 with just me and gas, battery, trolling motor. They are the best option for these boats imo because a 220lb 23 hp gdsd is just too much for these light, thin, small boats. WIll carry pretty much all the load that boat can handle. its not gonna be as good as the 35hp on bigger boats when it comes to a load but it has certainly suprised me. If i could do it again I would do it the same given my boat

Run it in a sand river? Or even just over a couple sandbars? Sounds like you wore the prop down.[/quote]

NOPE. haven't ran it in much just deep water an river it only has 9.6 hrs on it got in sept and with a busy fall work schedule only got it out a few times

This is kind of a silly question but how often do you copperhead guys grease your zerks and how much grease? I've been having bearing issues on mine.

Post subject:  Re: Copperheads

Few pumps every 10hrs is what I do. Only pump until you feel pressure, what kind of grease are you using? Should use a good synthetic waterproof grease to get good bearing life. Corrosion and dirt is what kills bearings in our applications

Post subject:  Re: Copperheads

Haven't greased mine yet as i only have a few hours but was going to go with what rhock said 20 hrs seems a little more then i wanna trust.. and I'm going with amsoil grease.. now here a question where does the grease go besides the bearings you keep putting in .. i like the go devil design pump til fresh grease comes out
