Re: Best boat/motor for the timber?
Go with a custom builder. Have him put some serious gunnel rails and catwalks with a pointed bow. 1/8" sides and 3/16" bottom. When you do bounce off a tree, you leave a mark on the tree and not your hull!

Oh...and tall sides for bays and open water....center console to duck behind for spray and low hanging tree limbs.

Like this one...except maybe consider tapered chine for better turning at faster speeds. I have decent turning with square chine...but, not at WOT.

I would go with a 2072 with a long tail. Make sure you get a a flat nose on the bow.

Re: Best boat/motor for the timber?
If I built a dedicated boat for running timber it would probably be about a 16/40-42 skiff. 3/16 bottom with a PD on it. That pointy sucker would slice down the hardwood as I ran thru it if I didn't run a PD it would be a short shaft Longtail for sure. I've been running my 1860 hard in the thick timber for the past few weeks and she's definitely a little porky to be squeezing thru some of the gaps. Bounced off several trees and came out unscathed. The big boat has done really well considering it has a 75" beam. You just have to pick your lines through the trees wisely.

Re: Best boat/motor for the timber?
I hunted NE arkansas this year in the flooded woods. Ole boy we hunted with had a 20-72 sea ark with a 90 Nissan, couldn't believe where he went and what he went over and through with that rig. He always took 5 folks, a dog or 2, few dozen dekes, and had a job box in there with a bunch of shit in it.
