Newb here. Pardon me, if this has been brought up before, but i'd rather just ask.....

Currently running a 15/48 SeaArk semi-v, short transom. I've got two motors for it- a 20hp Merc, short shaft outboard and a 16hp GD Crawfish. Last year, water got high, so i ran the Merc most of the season, only one hunt with the GD and it seemed to do okay. Thinking about getting rid of both and switching to a SD, with best of both worlds in one, non-pain-in-the-ass to deal with setup.... My question- am I wasting my money and time going to a SD with the semi-v? Also, if I were to go to an SD, would pods help at all to improve the transom angle and help the SD by possibly reducing some of the turbulence of the chines and the ass of the boat riding deep?? The rear seat is full width and foam filled, if that helps anything. Is there a particular SD that works better on a semi-v?

Just trying to cover all my bases before making a decision that could turn out to bite me in the rear. Thanks in advance!

Scratch the semi-v. Yes you are wasting money and time putting a sd on. Pods kill performance for surface drives, disturbs the water to the prop. Foam in a rear seat is irrelevant.
Im saying what everyone else will tell you. If you don't listen and drop a SD on the semi-v hull it will do okay with a light load but it wont carry a load as well as a true mud hull.
The best thing to do is buy a mud hull or at least a flat bottom john boat like an alweld.
Use the search feature, there are plenty of newbs that asked the same questions you just did.

So many posts on these questions, and being a newbie doesn't excuse you from the fact that the search feature works, and leads to all sort of wonderful information. Knowing how to find information on this site will also help in the future when working on it, maintaining it, and nifty additions you can use to make life easier in use. If you can't figure out how to search, put keywords or your question into Google and add mudmotortalk at the end. Don't be lazy, especially when you're considering spending money. Or, be lazy, and be unhappy later with what you bought or did because you didn't have truly enough info to make the right decision for you.

Now, be sensitive and pissed because you don't like my response. It's been a few weeks since I've been called an ass.

TreeHugger - if you use Google to search, you can add "site:mudmotortalk.com" to the end of your search. It will only kick back results from this website, and it makes searching for information much easier. The search on this website kind of sucks.

The surface area of your boat causes displacement, which allows the boat to float. Regardless of where foam is located - it does not help your boat float any better. The foam is to help the boat float if it were to fill up with water. That's the only time the foam "creates buoyancy"

Have 1546 mv welded with pods and 27hp MB SD. Granted it's a light boat...0.080 330lb but I get 27mph alone and 22 with another big guy and hunt load. Pods do limit swing of the motor some but needed them to help with the weight of motor (200lb) and short transom. They real nice to use as a step to help get in and out of boat.

Yes, you can do it. Yes it will "work".

Is it a good idea? absolutely not. Period.

You can dance around it anyway you want, and listen to all the "I have that set up and it works ok for me" you want, but the answer is don't do it unless you are forced to for some reason (which there is a work around for most if you just think about it).

If you want to work "ok" then go for it. Otherwise look at putting the correct boat with the correct motor.

Same goes for pods with a surface drive. They are not ideal and they do not function properly. Note-I did not say won't function, but rather function properly.

I promise you with both modv boat and boat with pods, you put same motor on the proper boat and it will perform (not just speed, but all around performance) MUCH better.

If you want to go to a SD, sell your boat and get a proper package. If money is an issue, then sell your boat, and buy a good used package.

Don't be lazy. You are spending a lot of money anyway you go. Don't just do a post and listen to the first thing some jack leg who may or may not know what the hell they are talking about says (and yes, there is some great info on here, but also A LOT of bad and really bad info) .

There are probably a 100 or more threads on this specific subject.

Do your research and don't rush.
