Post subject:  Surface Drive Only???

Just wondering how many of you have a Surface Drive and only a Surface Drive. With the larger motors doing 30+ mph its almost feasible to have one boat for fishing and hunting. I guess with larger families it becomes a problem.

Anyone using these to fish with the family. I'm talking yourself, wife, and a couple kids all jumping in and going fishing or crabbing.

Thanks

I use mine for everything from duck hunting to running yoyo's. An outboard would be nice for some of the longer runs I make but I cant justify buying it for the few times I would use it.

I have a long tail rig and a surface drive rig. I use them both for hunting, fishing, crabbing, crawfishing, and frogging. Wife and children come all the time and so does the old man and lab. We enjoy our trips and do it all bro

Thanks for the Comments guys. I'm thinking hard about whether I should sell the outboard and get a surface drive. I hate to have two boats. Something else to maintain and find a parking spot for.

Thanks again

I can't say I have only one boat for all purposes, but I do swap out my surface drive for an outboard when I want the use of an outboard. Two motors for one boat is an ideal solution for me. Take 30 minutes max to swap one motor for the other.

I’ve only got one boat and it’s a surface drive. It works well, you just gotta be cool with noise.

I sold them outboards years ago. I got a 1948 for family outings and my kid has a 1448 23 copperhead that's our fk it boat

I wouldn't need so much garage space if I only had one boat, that's for sure. For me, one boat just doesn't work, but I think you could make it work just fine.

Used to have a boat for bass fishing, bowfishing and duck hunting. Was wayyy too much upkeep and hassle, let alone the stuffed garage. Switched to a 2060 Gatortrax with everything modular so I can bowfish, bass or hunt. Modded 35hp keeps me going for what I need.

OK...Let me ask this.

I understand that a Surface Drive Motor will not perform on a regular Jon Hull.

How would an outboard perform on a MM Hull? Its made beefier and the angle is a little different, but it seems the outboard would push it just as well.

My boat performs excellent with a outboard, but has a square chine. My boat absolutely hauls ass with both a 60 and 90hp tiller motor.

Only if you operate in waters suited for a surface drive and corresponding type boat. If you ever fish walleyes on Mille Lacs, you'd not only curse the surface drive, but also the flat bottomed boats they're mounted to as well.

So no, not for me, I have a dedicated duck boat and a fishing/family boat

Well, I don't fish so the duckboat with Prodrive serves as my only sporting boat. I also use it as a barge during the summer to pick up weeds that float down the lake and on to our shore.

Now, my other boat is the 21 foot V8 inboard bow rider that mama generally prefers to ride in.

Still running a 1648 Alumacraft riveted jon with a MB45. Running lite it will run 37.7 MPH with a Hammer prop geared 38/47. @4500 rpm. It will run mid twentys with a five person load. Hull is .072 gauge aluminum and weighed 290 Lbs bare. Its had surface drives pushing it since new and is into its 10th season. I think it performs pretty good for what I use it for.

Send me a pm with a video of those speeds if you don't mind. Don't think you are running those speeds with a hammer, but if you are, prove me wrong and I'll owe you a cold beer :D

Cop shop radar gun from ramp. They always hold up in court, when fighting a speeding ticket. Had my 30' performance boat radared also. Cop friend says they are accuracy tested every year. More accurate than GPS so he says.

I'm one of the highest ranked road officers at my department and have been on special weapons and tactics teams and currently train rookie officers. Radars are only accuarate if calibration is done with tuning forms before every tour of duty and radar guns must be certified every 6 months. Most of the time they can be + or - 5 mph, which is why most departments do not instruct their officers to write tickets over 6 mph to not have any issues with radar inaccuracy. Like I said, get a video of your gps in boat and send it to me if you don't mind. I'll be happy to send you a video of my speeds over 35 with two people and a load, just pm me your number and I'll send it

That formula is to determine prop slippage. If done correctly, you can determine around where a boat is running to a pretty accurate mark. That's a pretty light rig, my boat weights about 350-400 lbs empty, with gas, battery, and other stuff, probably in the 600-700 range without people in it

I absolutely think they can be used exclusively as a family's only boat. I dont use mine for h8nting really these days but I still manage a ton of hours. I will still use it during duck season to joyride, or bass/catfish. I also use it to do a multitude of things. There isn't a time of year I dont have a family activity to do in the boat. I rarely am solo either, especially as the kids have gotten older. With a stage 2 1854 I can run 29-30 with just about any load in any configuration. My rig is a year round good time!
