Speaking of oil coolers. Has anyone added an automotive style oil/transmission cooler in front of the cooling fan? It seems like these modded engines don't have alot of oil in them for the rpms/heat they have to run. A larger cooler will add additional oil capacity. Cooler oil also helps the engine/piston/bearings run cooler.

I haven't checked with a temp sensor to see if it has any effect on temps but am using anyway.

a few guys are running aux coolers. maybe one of them will chime in.

I'm running one on mine. It is a transmission cooler that came from Napa. Easy to install and for only $40 bucks, you gotta put one on. More oil can't hurt!

I run the one from napa part # 1-4818 from what I was told it will help cool by around 30 degrees. Everything is included in the kit for 40 buck anything to help with the break down, count me in.

Ok next question: Do you cover part of the coolers when running in below freezing temps so the oil can get to operating temp? Where do you guys mount yours?

I live in Texas never really see that kind of temp. but maybe someone else might know that answer. I mounted on top of my pd motor screen.

I does work good I did a test on mine just to see, I added a oil sensor to the oil filter mount from (stage 6 about the size of a tiny tach) and with the single original oil cooler my temp went up to 225-230 and with just the aftermarket cooler the temp was about 210, oil starts to break down aroung 240 from what I have read( convincinal) synthetic a little higher, I am running stage 3 so temps will be higher than normal I ended up coming out of the original going to the after marker then back to the block and it stays about 195 now.

Thanks for the info basinlover. i am debating puttig the stock cooler on the fan cover or finding a larger than stock but not wider than the fan cover aftermarket cooler and adding it.

also when you are ready to mount it you can just screw it into the side of the block where the plug is or you can remove your oil filter mount by removeing the 1" nut under the oil filter the drill and hole about a little less than 1/4" parrell (on the underside of the adapter) with the oil outlet port (NOT ALL THE WAY THROUGH) which is the front hole on a prodrive then drill a hole 90 degrees to that hole from the outside going to that hole ,(this is the side of the adapter)and tapping it 1/8 NPT this way the oil coming from the block passes over the sensor as it goes out to the oil cooler, sounds complecated but once you remove the oil filter adapter and look at the back side of it you will see what I am talking about. Then all you do is put the adapter back on it has a oring so there is no gasket to worry about. the temperture sensor also needs 12 vdc to run so yoall have to get from the switch by the handle I just tied it to the hot wire that goes to the shutdown solinod on the carb originally. I was able also to modify the multimeter from stage 6 which has overheat and overrev which would shutdown the motor but I am haveing trouble getting it to read the proper RPMS so it is shuting down the engine prematurly but the overheat works.

I see it requires a resistor spark plug for high rev engines, but I didn't see where it specifies what revs are considered high. ?

I'm going to put me one of them larger oil coolers on my motor. I'm a little concered about oil temp when runnin these modded motors hard cuttin trails at hours at a time.

I will take some pictures tomorrow right now I am just running the temp meter and not the multimeter cause the multimeter displays rpms as a default so you have to press the button 6 times on the multimeter to get to the temperture. The temperture meter only shows temp and works great and it does do Fariheight, it also lights up at night so you can see it in the dark. Also it already comes with the temperture prob and ant to bad for 50 bucks.

It doesn't matter whether u'r stock or not. Increased oil capacity + cooler oil temps = longer engine life & more X in between changes.

I'm runnin' a 71/2 x 12 on my new engine!

I would also suggest an oil PSI gauge

How much psi these things running?

You can get a bottom mount 1/8 npt small 0-60 psi gausge and it works great on a prodrive you just screw it in the block where the plug is and you can see it clearlly from the driving position, thats why I drilled the adapter for the temp meter cause I used this port up, also you should get a fluid filled gauge cause of the vibration I got mine from a the gauge house in Broussard LA. think it was about 25 bucks. Don't get the back mount you can't see it unless you put a 90 on it it then it sticks out to far. and the psi stays about 50 psi.
