Post subject:  35 Go-Devil SD with EVT upgrades caused problems

Hello to all. I'm a noob to this forum. I have a 35 SD with an exhaust, Mikuni, and intake. All purchased from Extreme V-Twins. I started with just the exhaust. Recently added the intake/carb. First of all, I wasn't pleased with the intake/carb kit when it arrived. It was sent to me with no instructions. But anyway, got it installed and ever since then, the motor has been giving me problems. The motor acts like it loses fuel then dies. Sometimes it will do this when I'm on top running wide open. (About 4000 RPMS). Other times it does it when I'm idling. So far, I've replaced all fittings on the fuel line. Installed an new inline filter at the motor, and changed the fuel water seperator. Installed a new primer bulb. On my boat, I have a 3 way valve to switch between the 2 tanks I'm running under the bow. I'm running 3/8" fuel line because of the distance from the tanks to the motor. Also, today I moved the rev limiter box from the dry storage box in the middle of the boat. I installed a new dry box in the back of the boat right next to my battery box. I relocated the rev box to this location because I was told that placing the box too far from the motor could cause problems. I also made a new fuel line with just a fitting and a primer bulb that I'm going to use to bypass the water seperator and the 3 way valve. I haven't had a chance to run it since I moved the rev box, or try the fuel line. Just looking for any info as to what you guys think it could be. At this point I'm willing to try just about anything.

Thanks, and sorry for the long first post.

Have/did you call EVT about your problems???

They will take care of you. Unless that is this is conjured up somehow...

I tried calling them with questions about the install of the intake. Maybe I caught them at a bad time, but the customer service was less than stellar. I had to call Mike 4 times I think before I got an answer. Never returned my messages. Email had proved to be less than effective as well. I brought my boat to a local service place and they kept it for 3 weeks. I was told that everything looked good in the shop, but they couldn't tell me when they would get time to put it in the water. I was tired of waiting and went and got it back from them. I'm hoping that someone on here can give me some pointers.

Mr. Eater sir,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,first I have to say that like many on this site, you have been bitten by the bug.

The "ishouldn'tbemessinwithshitthatiknownothingabout" bug.

If you need instructions to install a carb and intake you prolly should have taken it to someone that knew what they were doing from the very beginning.

Good luck.

Never had one time I've called Robert and him not answered the phone NOR explained anything I had question on. They've gone the extra mile for me more than a couple times...seen them at run's turning wrenches on folks motors they haven't even built...no offense but your first post out of the box sounds like a trolling mission. I've only called Mike a couple times and he's never failed to call me back either. THey both have jobs outside of EVT...nonetheless they handle their shit.

If you are tellin the truth....I apologize, BUT...to come on here and your first post out of the box start flaming a couple guys that have done business w/ I'm bettin 50% of the posting members here that don't have anything but good to say for them....I say bullshit

Otherwise...refer to River's post

If you think its fuel starvation then run a short line from your fuel filter into a fuel can right at the transom. If it runs well than you have something on the supply side thats leaking. If it doesn't run then start going up the line to the fuel pump. Make sure the line from the pump to the carb is not kinked. If you re-used the stock line there, put on a new piece with a gentle bend up to the carb.

Just a thought, but change out the 3/8 fuel line for a 5/16 or 1/4.

First of all, I wanna say that I'm not bashing anyone. If I was into that kind of stuff I would have named the local shop who kept my boat for 3 weeks without fixing it. I don't believe in bad mouthing people based on one expierence. As far as not being able to install the setup without instructions, the only thing I had questions about was where to connect the wires for the CDI box. I'm no mechanic, but I'm not a moron either. I apologize it it seems like I'm fishing here. But to prove that I'm not, anyone in the New Orleans area can PM me their number. We'll set up a time and go run the boat. I just wanna get my rig running right. Not trying to badmouth any person or vendor.

If the problems started happening after the carb install thats what I would be looking at.

OK, here is the latest update. I changed my fuel line back to 1/4". This has totally removed my top end fuel issues. Ran the boat tonight for a bowfishing trip, and ran all night on top end without as much as a sputter. But it did give me the same issues while idling. Granted, it has gotten much better than it was before. I used to kill 20-30 times a trip. Tonight was only 3. All 3 times the primer bulb was kinda soft. 2 times one or 2 pumps and she started right back up. When i got back to the launch, ball was kinda soft, a few pumps till it was hard but it wouldn't start again. Also, I noticed tonight that when trying to restart the motor after it kills, it seems to smoke a bit. Any suggestions?

Also, I wanna thank everyone for their help and suggestions. And Mitch, the 1/4" fuel line definately helped.

Good deal on the top end- sounds like you had some air in there.

For idle, try your idle mixture screw (over by the fuel intake port on the carb) at 1.5 -2 turns out as a baseline and see if it still happens. Smoke may be caused by forcing too much fuel into the carb with the bulb.

I wanna say thanks to everyone who offered me help with these issues. I also want to apologize for the way I worded my first post. Come to find out, NONE of my problems were caused by the EVT upgrades. It was all a fuel line issue. I think all thats left is a little fine tuning on the carb to get it spot on. Hopefully nobody reading my posts gets any bad feelings about EVT. The products I have from them are definately high quality pieces. I'm not downing any of their products. Also, Mike sent me a PM last night, so its obvious to me that they do care about their customers and that they stand by their products.

I've had the same problems w/ a older motor and it was the fuel pump starting to go out?
