Post subject: | Engine troubles... Whats the deal??? |
Yesterday i was at the lake running the boat and my motor started acting up. I made about a 5 or 6 mile run and then went through some pretty thick stuff. I shut down the motor for a little while, then shortly after i started it back up. It started with hesitation, it died then i started it back up and before i let it die i rev'd it up dumped the clutch and got out of the slough. As i hit the main lake it started cutting out. I let off the throttle untill it stopped then got back in it. It cut out a few times then all was well. I made the 6 mile run back across the lake and hung out with some friends and had a few beers. Everyone decided to dip on out and go home. Well i started my motor up, pulled the clutch and it died. I started it again, rev'd it up pulled the clutch and it died again. After that... Well it wouldn't start. I recently put stage one heads on my motor and also added a timing key. I have both spark and fuel. Pulled the cover off the control box and there were not any loose connections or anything. Pulled the plug on the fuel bowl to drain any water... No water at all. So what gives??? Anyone have any ideas??? Could the timing key be sheared? |

You have a water separator??? If not change your fuel filter and clean your fuel tank.Look in the tank with a flash light and see how much water is in it. |

My first guess would be something in the fuel bowl, or a water bubble or some dirt. If its a short or elect it will die quick and not try to start, if its fuel it will spit and sputter! It could be fuel delivery problems, to large a line 1/4" is best or could be fuel pump. Did you check how hard the fuel line bulb was and is the tank vented? Have there been any other changes then heads and key? JD |

I do have a water separator and then a small filter up by where the tiller mounts to the motor plate. When the motor was cutting out, the bulb was the first thing i grabbed. It was hard as a rock. Just to let yall know, im not getting any kind of spit or sputter at all. It just cranks, and cranks and cranks. No attempt to turn over. |

You said you had spark. Spray some kind of combustable fluid in the cylinders and crank it. If it pops you got a fuel issue. Do you have on of the shutdowns on the bottom of your carb? |

How do you know that you are getting fuel? Is the spark plug wet? Starting fluid can usually give you a clue of the problem. The fact that the bulb was hard makes me think it's a fuel issue. I seem to remember having a similar problem and it was the bulb. I ran a 6 foot line from my fuel filter directly into my tank to pinpoint the problem. Do you have a Mikuni and rev limiter? It seems that lately people are having problems with the fuel solenoid also. There is another thread about how to test it. I would also dump out the fuel water seperator just in case but thats probably not the issue . I really have no clue what I'm talking about but I'm pretty good at regurgitating what other people have said. Just like my two year old when I cuss. |

I have fuel, the plugs were wet. I tried starting fluid, but no go... I was wondering about that solenoid on the carb myself. It does go back to the coils..... But how do i test it? |

[quote="Mitschke"]the bulb was the first thing i grabbed. It was hard as a rock.quote] Had that happen on our boat and it was the valve or check ball whatever is inside the bulb was sticking. Replaced bulb worked perfect. |

Pretty sure i do keep a toolbox in my boat.. Dont know what numb nuts was talking about. Anyways, thanks for the help yall. Glad i got all of yalls ideas incase i couldnt figure it out today. Ive been busy with class this week, and since i dont really have a place to work on my boat. I had to wait for my schedule and a buddies schedule to work out so i could use his shop to work on my motor. So today after class i took it over there and pulled the screen zipped off the nut. Timing key was fine. From the get go i was pretty sure it would be something really simple and that i would eventually find the problem... So i pulled the cowling and checked to see if my coils were fucked up... Nothing. So was looking at the diode wires and i noticed one side of the wire was pinched and i looked at the other wire up against the intake and it was chafed. It only had 1 strand exposed. go figure, it shorted out.. Pulled it away and viola... Fired right up. It was pinched between the cowling and the intake. I pulled the wire off put 10" of shrink tubing on it so it wouldn't happen again and it was a done deal. Now that i think about it, it started to rub through when my motor was cutting out. And its a miracle i made it 6 miles lol. But when i killed the motor, that was a done deal. |
