I have a 2008 mudbuddy 23hp HD sport surface drive motor. I have had it for 10 years now. Just recently i have been having a problem with the motor dying on me while at full throttle while driving on the water/or just running the motor in the garage. I have a straight line from my gas tank which is in the front of the boat to the motor itself without a bulb. I never had this problem before, so just want some of your guys input on what it could be and what i can do to fix it. Thanks.. Ryan

Prolly time for a fuel pump. Double check for no leaks in the fuel line and squeeze your hand bulb, if the motor stays running when you continue to squeeze the hand bulb but fades out after you've let off then its prolly your fuel pump.

Thanks for the input.. I have never put in a bulb and been running a straight line right to the motor. When i first bought the motor i was told i didnt really need that for the mud motor and its been like that for the last 10 yrs, but now it randomly dies out on me while im driving at full throttle, so you recommend installing the bulb??

At this point, the bulb is simply to isolate the fuel pump as being the issue. If you pump the bulb and it quits trying to die, then your fuel pump is going out. Some people run bulbs, some dont. Keeping one in the boat in case your fuel pump goes while on the water can save needing a tow or a long paddle/troll, but you dont have to leave it installed until you need it.

I know this was a year ago I haven’t had the time to really look at my motor. Anyways, I have new oil, new spark plugs and I replaced the fuel pump, but the motor still is dying at full throttle. Even if I put a bulb/pump in my gas line, I still can’t try pumping the bulb to give it gas since the motor just randomly dies without even a warning. Anyone have any related issues with their motor and can give a guy some input?? Does anyone have a motor manual for the 2008 23hp HD sport vanguard motor they can forward me a copy?? Thanks guys!!

Clean the carb well, change fuel filter, tighten all fuel line connections. Still sounds like fuel delivery issues, but could be a messed up kill switch or wire grounding out somewhere which is killing spark.

Sounds like a dirty carb to me, especially if you have a straight line to motor without a filter. The Mudbuddy website has the vanguard repair manuals for free. Link below.

Mechanical fuel pump sounds weak. It'll keep gas up there but not enough for the demand at wot. You end up running the bowl dry before it can keep up.

Thanks guys appreciate the help. I did replace the fuel pump and that wasn’t the case.

Check for vacuum leaks in fuel lines at all connections and also check hose. Some of the grey hoses have a liner that can collapse and cause fuel delivery issues.

Update on motor.. took carburetor off motor cleaned it throughly. Looked pretty clean still no crap in it at all. Checked gas lines and the one vacuum line and all good. Motor is dying at around 3700 RPMs still. So decided to put in a pump in the fuel line and pump it up to pressure before starting it. Start it and give it gas until it reaches 3700 and pump the bulb which was not hard at all but after pumping it a few times I had it at 3900 RPMs without it dying. So obviously I am not getting the pressure so anyone have some input on what it could be? Thanks a lot..
