Hey guys, could use your advise for installing new valve springs in my 2006 32hp Briggs Vanguard. I am installing a 308 cam and currently have stock springs. What #lbs new springs should I get?

P.S. Anyone know #lbs and dimension of stock springs for this engine? I have found data for the newer 35 Briggs but the older model specs is a challenge.

Call one of the performance shops and get shims is what most do, or you could order the new style springs with pink marking on them they are better than the old ones but they may still have to be shimmed I am not 100 percent sure. Maybe someone else with more knowledge will shed some light on this for you.

Pink springs Briggs number 845589. I would use 2 .060 shims under each spring. Shim is known as the A101 from vsi

Figure what Compression ratio you want to run. Also take into account your valve train geometry when milling heads. Figure your powerband you want to run and time the camshaft to tailor your needs.

For the record I've never built a 32. I would deck the heads .040. If you got the cam straight from Dyno then its set straight up at 108 with no advance. I would advance the cam +5 to set the intake centerline at 103. At minimum install stainless valves. I would call this conservative build numbers. That's still enough cam timing to pull into the high 4K range if the heads ,carb and exhaust allow it. I really don't trust the older "white" connecting rods to twist very high so behave.

Good advise and was looking for this kind of direction.... I appreciate you guys weighing in on this mod ; sometime I dont know what I dont know, so its good if you add to the discussion based on your experience. I have particualrly learned alot from both you Will, & Marcus. You guys are great! Thanks again, and will let you know how it comes out. ...Hope I can put it all back togehter by duck season!

There are some secrets of the trade that we have learned along the way. Especially in the valve train department. Remember when decking heads you need to account for the pushrod now being too long. That has to be accounted for on the valve stem. another thing is cleanliness of parts upon install. You cant be too clean. Don't use a buzz wheel to get gasket material off... Scrapers and scotch brite is all that's needed with paper towels. It may sound elementary but I've seen things from builds that others have done that have signs of foreign object debris in the cylinders and it makes its way into the upper ring crevice and scratches the cylinder bore.

The 32 is short stroke motor, so to make power they need to spin more RPM than its longer stroke bothers. I'd start with bigger valves, a camshaft that has fairly short events, and Roller rockers to increase the lift and effective duration at the valve. Again we are limited on stroke, so cramming the cylinder with more air/ fuel will help.

Decking the heads will make the combustion chamber smaller to increase compression ratio. Contrary to what people say cut the heads a lot. Even at .065" decking on a 35 the CR is about 8.75:1 Still REALLY safe with 93 octane fuel. Hell 93 is safe in these engines at 9.5:1 CR.

A GOOD valve job really shines on low lift flow. These motors mostly spend there life below 5k so low lift flow is important for everyday usage. Don't fall into the hype of just lap one in there.... Nope larger valves and get a good 3 angle valve job.

Spring pressure. Use at least 2 .060 shims to increase seat psi to keep valves from floating. The 308 is a soft cam. softer than stock, we need to keep the valves at bay for rpm increase. if the shim don't fit the pocket.. modify the pocket or the shim. DO NOT BEAT THE SHIM in there.... I see it a lot.

Don't be afraid to ask. If this is over your head and you are in a hurry pay someone. If you have time to learn ask questions along the way.
