hey, what are some of the signs that your cam is wearing out on these 40 briggs motors?

mines having trouble turning up a wore prop. it takes it quite a while to achieve full rpm's and hardly ever hits the rev limit anymore. it wants to run 4600 rather than 4800 everywhere unless I trim up too much.
hopefully just an adjustment somewhere, but after hearing stories of 40's eating cams, i'm startin to think about it.

it still starts fine and runs great, just lost top end performance. the valves lash is ok.

I don’t know, I did a stage 2 Jeremiah build on my motor so I have no idea. If he still has my old stock 40 cam, do you want it? If so, you can have it for free bro if it helps you out

i'm gonna check out all the usual suspects and see what's what. might be somethin easy.
I do appreciate the offer, but motors under warranty, hopefully if it's somethin major it will be covered!

No problem bro, they should cover it for sure if it’s something major

While setting your valves just make sure the valves have full lift

I haven't been using it much, only 130 hrs on it.

dropped off a prop at Baggy's to get cleaned up this am. lent out my spare, so I won't have a prop to run till I get mine back. lol

went fishing today. had about a hour run one way in basin. headed home and about 5 min from the landing somethin gave up. I must be a friggin nostradomas. lol when I got it started, it barely runs on one cylinder, but I limped it back to the landing and didn't have to paddle or call for help, so it's all good. fixin to use some of that 3 year warranty here shortly! lol might be somethin simple, might not.

Post subject:  Re: 40 briggs cam wear symtoms

well, just went go poke around motor. pulled plugs. one looks great, one black.
put plugs in plug boot spun motor over, and have strong fire on both cylinders.

took off air filter and looked for debris in carb. nothin seen. put it back on.

so... I got fire, maybe it's a fuel thing. maybe a coil?

I put my finger on the sparkplug hole and it was sucking/blowing when I turn it over.
I listened to fuel pump and it sounds normal.

cranked up motor and it's barely running, sounds like it's on 1 cyl.
gonna go mix me a drink and then go pull valve cover on dead side.

hey, does Nick Peltier do warranty work?

pulled the valve cover. looks like valves are moving. gonna be at the shop Monday morning.

I just went go pull the other side valve cover. top push rod all bent up and the other one looks like somebody bit off some of it. guess I found the problem. lol
not a briggs fan right now.

Post subject:  Re: 40 briggs cam wear symtoms

well, I may be wrong. lol
the wear on the cam apparently isn't too bad. my mech just wanted to make briggs aware of it for future reference.

got the boat back today. it ran a little rough for a few minutes then cleaned up.
actually ran 30 on the gps in front of my camp. lol
i'll run the heck out of it and we will see how it does. looks like the valve job has brought back the power.

got .006'' wear on the #2 exhaust lobe. I guess that's not enough to matter? i'm no mechanic. I wasn't gonna wait around for briggs to come look at it. got fish to catch. lol

if it gets worse i'll bring it back. that's the bueaty of a 3 year warranty!!!!!!

Post subject:  Re: 40 briggs cam wear symtoms

well, it ran great for about 10 hours. now it's down on power again. I would not recommend a 40 briggs to anybody who wants a reliable motor. or anybody who wants factory support when they have problems. I've gotten neither so far.

Have u verified she flat now? Could be as easy as a valve adjust. They need to be set bout 10hrs after a valvejob anyway
