Post Anyone Use Epoxy Paint???
Well i talked to a sherwinn williams guy today about the KEM 400 paint and he told me that it would work but he recommended i use their Epoxy paint because it would be stronger, and take more of a beating. He also said i wouldn't need to prime i could just etch with alumabrite and spray the paint on. Has anyone used this or know about it? if so please speak up, i would like some advice

I use epoxy primer and epoxy paint. And I spray a etch primer on it. I've heard you can just spray etch primer and paint it but I take an extra step just for the hell of it.

If in not mistaken Sherwin Williams makes a wash primer that you can use for a etch primer.

Spend the money on good paint so you won't have to bitch about a crappy paint job and end up repainting it.

Brandon is that paint holding up good? I don't know what Gatortail uses but it doesn't take much to scratch it off.

If I keep my boat I'm thinking of repainting among other things.

Seems to be holding up fine. Don't get me wrong, it will scratch but takes a little bit.

I used a DuPont knock off on the base? Then Kem 400 on for the black in the Nat gear.

Kem 400 is good. But if you want to use a better paint go with imron, stuff is hard and lasts.

the guy mentioned the wash primer, but he's obviously never painted a boat. idk what route to go because i have an imron dealer here too. I wonder if Nason etch primer and that epoxy paint from sherwinn would do

Wash primer isn't an etching primer but it's next best thing.

Gator tail sands their boats with orbital sander, washes them with aluma brite (or similar) which does nearly what an etching primer does, sprays wash primer, then paint with Kem 400 or other paint that is similar to Kem 400.

I do the same except don't wash with aluma brite. I sand boat completely with orbital sander 60 grit, wipe good and clean with acetone, spray wash primer and then paint with Kem 400.

The wash primer acts almost like an adhesive and instructions say optimum top coat time is 30-60 minutes after priming and HAS to be painted over within 4 hours or you lose the adhesion of the primer.

It's like you spray the primer then turn right around and paint and the paint bonds with the primer to adhere really well to the metal.

If not mixed right the wash primer will spray out of gun like spray adhesive.

At one time I used some epoxy paint over wash primer and worked well but the epoxy tends to get chalky real quick when the boat sits in the water or sits in the weather.

Lol $150 a gallon is crazy!

$36-60 per gallon depending on how much I buy at a time.

Most SW stores, even Chemical Coatings/Product Finish stores can't do a Flat or even a semi-gloss color.

In long run its going to be easier for you to Call Sherwin Williams in Little Rock. Going to have to pay a little for shipping but they have everything you need and usually can fill order and ship same day

They mix straight flat paint.

The flattener makes the paint become chalky and less durable

What are you spraying with?

Are you putting down turf or something on deck and floor?

If it's a good gun then that will help a lot. Thin it down some (max is 15% so around 8%) and a gallon is usually plenty with doing some sort of floor and deck covering so you don't have to paint the floor and deck.

Otherwise if you do paint those areas then a gallon will be cutting it close.
