Post cut seat in a jon boat
im thinking of cutting my back seat out of my bot and making two half boxes. How would this wreck my bracing in the back of my boat? I know i would need to brace the inside of the seat after I cut it so that i would be able to stand on it. I know my foam is holding water and I would like to free up some weight.FullSizeRender.jpgFullSizeRender3.jpg

We cut everything out of this boat and put deck and gun box in it. Started as a plain Express Jon boat. It's the same boat as the picture above before I cut the seat out.

I've removed all the seats from riveted boats, with ribs, from 18 to 24 feet long. They will flex and twist a lot without the seat/seats to act as a thwart. The reason for removal is to add floorspace for carrying a load. The real danger is if you get in rough water the flex will bow out the sides and the boat will actually fold up in the middle. The remedy that we have used for many boats and has never failed us is to bolt a good Cedar 2" X 4" immediately below the gunnel, either inside or outside, the full length of the boat. On the 24 footer we use a 20 foot 2 x 4 and use stainless hardware with fender washers every 16 to 18 inches. It takes the flex out of even a 24 footer. We have never had a flex issue with welded boats and longitudinal stringers in the floor.
