Post Mod-V's?
First of all, I'd like to start off by saying I do know mod-v's are not the best choice for surface drives. With that out of the way, I was wondering how many on here are running one and what kind of speeds are you getting out out of it?

Speed empty means nothing. That boat will be a dog with a load. 3ppl and gear you will be lucky to get on step. I used to run a 1650 express with a mod v and a 35. It's not the mod v that kills it IMO. It's the lack of planing surface.

my buddy runs a 17/48 basstracker that we stripped all the inside out and i took the big center rib off the bottom and it does good 26-27, 24-25 with a load. 35 GDSD, it does decent but its not exactly a stock vbottom and its lightened up a lot.

I'm thinking about the same thing. I will mainly be running shallow stumpy flooded timber. Other time will be running deep water thinking maybe a durable semi-v will work better. Tight timber the slide I got with my smooth mud hull was pretty bad running WTFO. Thinking a 15-16' 44-52" wide with a gatortail 35 any suggestions. Main things for me is speed, turning, and durability.

I run the anti mud hull 1544 weld craft mod v ribbed for displeasure, and get 25 with a load. Abt 320 worth of passengers. Ice chest 4do deeks and a 60 lb dog. Running a 35 gtr. I run what I have till I can get a flat with slight v in front. But I am happy with what I currently have. Motor is bone stock and boat is a 98 model so I am sure my foam is a bit wet. Oh, and 2 batteries and 8 gallons of fuel.

I'm running a 1548 weldbilt mod v with 27 kohler. Push 25-26 empty and 19-20 with 900-1000 lb load. Not exactly the idea boat for that motor but good enough for me and gets me where the ducks are.

My question is what's the best setup for say the Missouri River, larger lakes, and the occasional trip to flooded timber/shallow water areas? Looking for that happy medium. Is the V just going to make choppy big water more enjoyable? Or as long as you dont get yourself into swells that top your rake with a standard mud hull...is the standard the way to go?

Those conditions are similar to where I hunt. I've got a gen 36 pd on an 1860 Jon with a mod v and I will tell you that you can expect mediocre performance at best with a heavy load. Meaning it will take longer to get on plane (if it does at all) and you will significantly drop speed. I've found when it comes to weight in the boat there's a fine line between ok and too much. If you're hunting 2 guys and gear it will be fine...add more people or decoys and it starts to turn into a dog.

There are builders that make hybrid v rakes on mud hulls. To me it seems like this would be a good all around setup. If you're dealing with a lot of chop on big water I would imagine that would help keep the boat from beating the hell out of ya while still being able perform in the shallows and carry a load. This is the type of hull I'll be looking to upgrade to.

Brickgw, what's your thought on performance crimps in addition to the hybrid v?

I had a 2072 mv and now have 2072 smooth bottom. Both were rough in big wave. The mv sends spray out sideways instead of farward which would probably be the advantage of a hybrid hull. The advantages of a smooth hull are more than any advantage I seen to the mv.

If I were by myself I'd put up with a rough ride and spray for the advantages of the smooth hull, but with a wife and little girl who like to tag along, staying dryer becomes the difference in staying out all day and calling er' quits at 10am!
