Post New to Oregon, have a question on surface drive VS outboard
Guys that run the Columbia River say I don't need a surface drive for my 13.5 foot long 4 Rivers EBADS. So I am wondering if there are any other Oregon duck hunters that hunt in other parts of the state, such as where there may be marshes or whatever, or even rivers, and do you think I would be better off with the surface drive, or a regular outboard? I can get a 4 stroke 9.9- 15 Hp Honda outboard and either would take me past the hull speed of the 4 Rivers EBADS. Nothing wrong with a little too much power. In a surface drive, I can go 12hp or more according to the boat manufacturer, just use a transom saver. In other words, I can get enough power with either setup. It is a question of would a surface drive be "very usable" in Oregon?

Just so you know, hull speed is 22 mph on the EBADS, and things get dicey over 20 mph. The powerful motors just mean more acceleration if I have to get out of a spot quick. I guess the surface drive VS outboard is simply a question of "is there sufficient mud and/or vegetation in Oregon to justify getting the surface drive? I am not concerned about any of the other factors, such as cost/fuel ecoomy, etc. It's purely a matter of what is necessary for performance for DUCK HUNTING.

Thanks.

Do you run shallow and through mud and veggies? If so then yes a surface drive would be a benefit. You will probably want a rock guard on it.

Hi there. To clarify the question, since I wrote a paragraph or two: "Is there enough marsh/swamp/mud/vegetation in Oregon to benefit from a surface drive over a standard outboard?"

If you have hunted Oregon extensively enough to know, I'd appreciate your input, whether you live in Oregon now or not. Thanks.
