just wanted to say hi. I am a new member to the site. Iv been a long time duck hunter and have always hunted off an outboard but recently moved and now I need a surface drive for the new area here. I know very little about surface drive motors and joined to learn. What would be the best hunting rig for around 8-13k range for a complete surface drive rig? I think I need a bout around 16-18ft because I often have to cross big open water to get the sloughs and back water. I also will often diver hunt and need the extra room to haul the amount of gear that goes with that. With all that said, where do I need to start? Any thing I need to stay away from? Thanks in advance. |

cs??? can either of those rigs be bought in my price range? I am having to sell my outboard rig this spring to get one. Also, when is the best time to buy a surface drive rig? |

New about 12 weeks before you want it. That was the wait time awhile back. Used after hunting season deals from people upgradeing. |

Prodrive or Gatortail. Their customer service (cs) is the best as well as their products. Big block and at least a 17 footer. Sent from my iPhone using |

Thanks for the help. One more question. How long does a mud motor last? If I were to buy a used one, what are some key points I need to pay attention to that the boat may be damaged. |

You can definitely find a good used rig within that price range. I'm sure of the other guys will give some tips of things to look for also, but to start with look for hours, mods (who did them and what "stage"), hull condition, etc. You will be able to see if the engine was taken care of or if it was ran in salt water with out ever being cleaned, which will cause electrical problems down the road. Also be mindful the tach can me changed and won't reflect true hours... |
