Post McClain Trailer Issues
Anyone have any issues with the McClain trailer tires? Mine started wearing tread just on the inside of the tire. After further inspection, I saw that the hubs had plenty of play. My buddy said the same thing about his - only lasted 4 months and got his from Prodrive.

Check your tires/hubs for play...

New tires/hubs - $250

I'll have to check this. Mine have worn horribly uneven!

You may have to change just the bearings vs the entire hub. I believe whoever is assembling the hubs thinks that when they tighten the castle nut, it will cinch up the inside seal, but it does not. You have to take a punch or a piece of wood and snug it up against the bearing so there's no play between the bearing and the raceway.

Where did you buy the trailer from?

Carlisle tires are junk period. They all wear uneven and I was lucky to get 10k miles out of any if them. My guess is that is what's on your trailer.

The way the brackets on the loading arms are is crap. Why would Go- Devil use these trailers ? Low quality. Relaxing the loading arms and tires .

My tires are doing this right now. I checked my bearings and they feel tight.

I need to make sure my axle is square with the trailer. I would think that it would wear the inside of one and outside of the other though if it was the axle being off

I had to do that. I hate how the leaf spring supports and wheel wells are one piece that just bolts to the frame. Very cheaply built trailers!

That's the difference between having nylon tires vs. steel belts. I had this problem on my utility trailer. The so called "trailer tires" are junk. And they don't last.

I called Carlisle cause my tandem axle trailer was wearing like crazy in 1500 miles. Girl took my info said she would have a tech advisor call me back well the next day I got home and there was four new radial tires sitting at the door. Never heard back from anyone.

I noticed one of the tires on mine was wearing on the inside last trip. I packed the bearings prior to season and I know I put it all back right, I'm just thinking I may have bent the spindle on thy side from hitting a huge pit hole. Anyone had a problem with the spindles bending on theirs?

Like guys have pointed out - there is more that can go bad than just the bearings....

Replacing the entire hub is a much better option IMO - especially when they
only cost a few buck more than just the bearings and race and are fully assembled
and just need a good grease re-pack and off you go.... Swap mine every other
year even though they never touch water at the ramp.... I swap them every
year on my other rigs that require me to put them under water completely...

Do it now in the off-season and get it over with !

Last I knew was that a bearing set was a seviceable part. Grease seals cost $4.00 to $6.00 . Verses spending $50.00 on hub assemblies makes no sense at all giga.

I have a McClain trailer and it has the vault hubs on it. No greasing needed at all.

Maxxis ST 8008 radials if you want quality tires.

There's no need to "countersink" the rear seal unless you've lost a seal before and grooved the spindle a little bit; seating the seal a little further into the hub assembly can provide better seal-to-metal contact if the spindle has been grooved a bit.

My experience with two McClain trailers I'll never own another. I do like being able to move axle for tounge weight. But they for me anyway have to much tounge flex. I think they need to start the a frame of the trailer sooner. I have also when loading boat In a heavy cross wind have the boat shoot sideways thru the trailer. Also putting faith in pre greased hub assemblies well good luck with that. I'll take the time to repack any day . The money saved can buy two to three boxes shells. Another way to fix a grooved axle tgunn is the use of a seal saver.

Just replaced mine today. If the seal doesn't, what does? The seal is immediately adjacent to the bearing. I just tightened mine, and took it around the block a few miles and had to further tighten some more - maybe they're not retightening them after initial install?

The spindle and race hold the bearing with pressure from the castle nut. That's it.....I promise.

You sure you got the correct size rear bearing? It should be tight on the spindle....it can't wobble.
