Post started a blind today
Picked up this boat and trailer for 100 bucks. No papers but it is 16 foot long. 58" wide at top. Gutted boat out. Building a wall in front and back to fill those parts with foam. Also will fill bottom with more foam and lay a plywood floor down in it for strength. Then will build the blind on top and sit down in the boat. Once it's in the spot we will build a wing off the back to park our driving boat in and get in the blind. Not top of the line but think it will be pretty nice. Will hunt 4 people out of it.

That there has potential. Sounds like a good plan.

Toss a tarp over it and drop a bug bomb in there (one that kills spiders too) and let it sit for a few hours. It'll make it a bit nicer to work on if you don't have em crawling out onto you every time you climb in it or reach in there to do something.

Exactly my plans lol. Goin get fogger in the morning and already have tarps. We were going to build a deck over the whole top and fill the whole inside with foam but changed plans for the cheaper but we think better also.

I'd suggest an automatic bilge pump with a battery just in case.Wouldn't want to show up at the blind after a rainy night to find it full of water.

We did it this way because we saved aloe of money that way. It will fill with water but has plenty enough foam where it will not sink. We gonna bring our batter and bilge back and forth to be sure it doesn't get stolen but if it fills we will put it pumping while we throw decoys. May try to figure out a door system for keeping as much water as possible out of it.

Why not just build a cover to lay over the top so that it stays dry when not using?

It is a little tall for me, but I'm 5'6. Every one else is taller and it seems like a perfect height when standing....I Normally stand the whole hunt and definitely shoot standing up..... after I cut the holes for shooting out I will cut plywood that will fit over the holes.

Why is it a waste of time? Friend it out there, place it and it's done. Keeps me from having to put a blind on my boat, and allows me to bring friends and family members to hunt in some comfort. Especially when I will have a small gas grill and gas heater in it. Every day I work on it I have my 3rd who climbs in 5 here with me and can't wait to come hunting with daddy. That in itself makes it very worth my time.. and I'm only in at about 220 buck right now so why not

This thing is all about comfort. We will have a burner in it. Mr heater. It will be fun. I have a 3 year old girl begging me to go hunting. So it will be a good place for her to come. Also will give me a place to go even if I don't think they will have duck that day I can go and just enjoy spending time with family and shooting the bull.

Like the hamster in that new commercial said, "I don't know where to go with that". If the camaraderie is your objective this will be an excellent blind. But from a duck hunting perspective it's too high centered. But good luck, hope it works for you.

Definitely wont be roughing it in the blind thats for sure. Only thing is if your little girl goes she will have a hard time seeing out watching birds and also with the solid plywood walls the gunshots will echo pretty good in there so some good hearing protection for her probably wouldnt be a bad idea.

We hunt a buddy's blind some time and it's plywood walls and it's not too bad but will keep ear mufflers handy for her... my Lil girl is more worried about playing with dead bird than seeing them in the sky lol....... as far as high centered, it's very light on top. Even with all the ply wood, every thing that's screwed down weight maybe 100-150 Pounds so it's very light. Trying to figure out what we gonna do for a roof so it's on haul right now. Thinking of using tin but try to find some free used one lol. The top is 58 " wide so it would take me 4 sheets of plywood to do it like that and that's more money we don't wanna spend lol. I an can't beat it for 250 total.

I like your idea, but question its execution:

Unless you're going to put a new deck on top of a LOT (& I mean a LOT) of foam, I'm afraid you're walls are too high. While hunting, someone will always have to be standing to help spot birds, especially the low flyers. And, if you do get low passing shots, are you sure you can shoot over those walls? Unless you're gonna put windows in or periscopes over those walls, I think your kids are gonna get bored real easily.

Good Luck.

We mostly stand anyway... and my little girl will come once maybe twice a year. Plus it's not going to be an every weekend blind. We chase birds all over depending on where they at. They may look super tall but they aren't but chest height.

Ditto the suggestion on spud poles to stabilize if you are going to have four guys in that thing.

There are a lot of free old boats in this neck of the woods on craigslist. Could do the same thing. Good idea. If it doesn't pan out the way you visualized, you haven't sunk a whole lot of money into it.

Sounds like a good idea in theory, but my dad had a kingfisher boat like that growing up and it wasnt sturdy at all. Anchor poles are a must.
