What are the reasonings behind the 2? Are they for specific style boats?

Tall and short transoms

Tall transom motors are for tall transom boats.

Short transom motors are for short transom boats.

NickT.. First off, welcome to the forum, almost anything and everything you need to know about a mud motor can be found in here.. Secondly, after reading your other post about hull size it seems your just starting out.. In my opinion the search feature sucks on the site, but if you go to google and type in "mudmotortalk" and then type in what your looking for, for instance "pro drive transom angle" or "hull size for 27 pd", that will bring up past threads that might have what your lookin for.. I learned way more about these rigs by searching than I ever did on the threads that I actually started.. Again, welcome to the board and good luck putting together your rig!

Long shat models let you dig deeper in the mud when you are in some thick slop. Keep that in mind when you making your choice.

Something also to keep in mind is the type of water you will be transversing - rough water is dicey with short transom and sides

Are we talking about actual shaft length or transom heights?

They don't know what they're talking about...that's the problem8-)

Actually all the answers are correct. We just don't know for sure what the question was.

If you can. Get the tall. Even if you have to build up your transome! I hunt out and bowfish out of a friends short shaft! No freeboard! And everytime you slow down the exhaust gets submerged!

Ok, instead of asking a question I'll give my situation and let yall chime in. I have the opportunity to buy a 27PD "short shaft" and I want to put it on a 16x48-17x48 sized boat. I was curious if it would work on a standard size transom.

How tall is the transome?

Post subject:  Re: short shaft vs long shaft pro drives.

Short shaft pro drive means it's a short transom, which is 16"

Post subject:  Re: short shaft vs long shaft pro drives.

Measure the transom of the new boat. There isnt really a "standard size transom". If its 20"ish you'll need to change a few things on the motor to make it work right. If it's 16"ish, it should work fine depending on the angle, of course.

Buy a short transom motor is you have a short transom boat. Buy a tall transom motor is you have a tall transom boat or want to build up a transom. Other than that, in theory they should be the same.

When I talked to Peck (at ProDrive) a while back, he said the only difference in the two is the bracket. It's my understanding that there is no such thing as a "long shaft" or "short shaft." Instead, PD's are "tall transom" and "short transom." The vertical drive shaft is the same length in both models. Can anyone tell me if I've misspoken?

I don't know coot but what I do know is that a 20" transome is 4" taller than a 16".

Spline adapter and the bushing inside the tower are longer. There is an extra 4" section on the bottom of the tower or bracket, whatever you want to call it. Lower unit is the same.
