 Possible new hull build
With the torque this kawi has, I'm debating on building a bigger boat, possibly 1854. My current hull is a 1748. Figure I would take advantage of the power to haul more crap. Haha.
I have built several 1 piece hulls as well as 3 piece hulls. But they were all 48' bottoms. And to be honest, I really didn't notice a difference in performance between the two. So what's better, 1 or 3 piece? The only difference that I noticed is a lot more welding.

I would think the less welds the better.

You could get a different chine if you had it broke up. I really don't think one is better than the other.

 Re: Possible new hull build
The only reason I went with the 3 piece on my current null is cuz Uncle J talked me into the 3/16 bottom, which I do like, but was it really necessary. I don't run stumps like some, just marsh and occasionally sandy bottoms.

 Re: Possible new hull build
Main reason for a 3 piece hull is so that you can have a thicker bottom. Such as .1875 (3/16th) bottom and .125 (1/8th) Sides

 Re: Possible new hull build
Banded-Mallard, Your bottom for you 17x48 weighs approx 185#'s. If you would have went with 1/8th instead of 3/16th, your bottom would have weighed 121#'s. I truly believe that the thicker bottom is worth the additional 60#'s in boat. It is also proven that a Stronger bottom with more weight runs faster than a lighter bottom of same size due to minimum flexing. Maybe not as a new hull, but as a used hull the 60#'s difference is nothing compared to a dented bottom of lighter gauge material.

And yes, the bottom of my hull looks like the day I built it.

 Re: Possible new hull build
Ask Jamie B how much length helps in the weight catagory. If you like a 48" bottom go 18,19,or 20x48. Trust me 1 more foot is a big difference when talking 48" bottom.
