Looking at a good deal on a 27 mud buddy...
What's the ideal boat size that will give me the best overall performance, such as speeds, load carrying, etc. I usually run 2-3 people on any given day of hunting! I have a 23 GDLT and It's a snail.. Looking to go a little faster! Thanks!

P.S. I don't have a crap ton of money to buy a brand new mud boat.. I'm a broke college kid!

I have a 1650 xpress right now, I need more speed than load carrying, but I would like to find a good balance. How would a 1548 do compared to my 1650?

If your on a budget . AN older used hull might be the way to go or if that's out of your reach Just beef up the transom of your express and put the 27 on the express. Not ideal but can hold you over till you have the money to get exactly what you want. Won't be the best set up in the world but it will give you more speed but build your transom up first . Good luck !

With 3 and gear, I'd expect 5mph and plowing...

6 in the shallows......maybe.

Get skinny hunting buddies.

3 and gear with that 27 on a 1650 express should be around 18-19. From experience. On a 1546 a 27 mini will pull right at 19 with that load.

The driver was 240, passengers were 165 and 230. Gear was guns and hunt bags.

What's better, 1648 or 1654 for the 27?

54. I have that motor on a 48 now (it's a lighter boat than the 52 it used to be on). The 52 rode higher in the water, even though it was a tad slower. It didn't get up as shallow, due to the boat being around 830 pounds without the motor (mine is only around 600). But the extra lift at the back meant once the water was deep enough for it to get up, it actually hops up a noticeable distance shorter than my 48. In an equal boat (weight difference only being due to the extra width), the 54 will be better all around than the 48.

So is the 27hp meant for a 16footer or max out on the 15foot? What kinda speeds are you saying youd get with a 27hp on a 1654?
Just for reference

These motors are HEAVY, the extra length helps offset the weight. I would never go back to a 16ft boat, and wouldn't even dream of going shorter than that.

It's not a traditional outboard, you have to quit thinking of it like one. IMO, the smaller motors do better on long skinny boats, bigger hp affords you the luxury of going wider.

I think as long as the boat isn't heavier than it should be, 23 is reasonable to expect solo, 17-18 with 3 (avg 200lbs plus standard hunting gear). The 4th person with gear is prob gonna be where the major falloff occurs. The 1546 Xpress weighs 320 lbs roughly and with a 27 mini (stock 11x10 prop) runs a shade over 24 solo with gas and battery in the front, 21or so with 2, 19 with 3 and guns/gear. A 1654 mud rig will be 500 to 550 on avg, so you'll get more lift but lose a little speed simply because you're trying to push more weight and your torque/thrust just is what it is.
