If you want it to last, you will have as much or more money in primer. I used XIM 400. It comes in a rattle can at $18 a pop. I used 6 cans on my 1648 (inside and out) For the base coat I used Shipendeck. I want to say it was around $70 per qt. |

If you'll strip it down to bare aluminum, duralux aluminum boat paint is hard to beat for the money. |

I don't believe you really need to strip it to aluminum. Just wash it real good with a heavy detergent, wipe with mineral spirits and then paint away |

I just know that shit sticks well to bare aluminum. Wasn't sure if it sticks well to other paint. |

The other duralux paint will stick to damn near anything, part of my fuel lines are still brown. . The green bare aluminum is great for bare aluminum. All I did with mine was use a scotch Brite pad (dish washing kind) to smooth it down and scuff up, then wiped down with rubbing alcohol, took a good beating this year in the timber in Arkansas and surprised me! |

it will stick and i have used it. if you use paint thinner it will actually make it somewhat tacky and other paints will stick. as long as you are not mixing arcylics, oils and latex you should be fine |

I would never just clean and paint over paint!! need to scuff it at a minimum... I use a DA on all the boats ive done with 180-320 grit...about the last 5-6 boats ive done I have used BLP Mobil marine paint...Its been holding up very well...Ive also even sprayed it over u-pol raptor spray in bedliner in a boat and it adhered very good!! I find acetone is a very good greese/wax remover to prep before paint. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

denatured alcohol, available in the paint aisle works very well and no residue. Acetone works very good on the stubborn oil, grease and blood stains. get a in-expensive HVLP paint gun it will apply a more durable and even finish than rattle cans, and it's just fun to use. 41Z7GNFV4HL.jpg |

Yes they have a few other colors. My base is dead grass green which is very close to the Gator Tail base color. |

Don't paint the bottom unless using GatorGlide. Your vinegar should be diluted with water 40% vinegar. Not a bad idea to neutralize with baking soda and water after. |

Whatever paint you choose the main item in all these posts is preparation. You will save yourself a lot grief by spending a little (or a lot) of time preparing the surface for paint. Bare aluminum, is ideal but not essential to completing your task. But preparing is - cleaning, scuffing (light sanding) will ensure your paint lives up to its full potential. I've seen the cheaper paints on ebay for that price, but not the "aluminum boat paint". If you had a color option, it ain't the right stuff. |

Many of the boat manufacturers use Sherwin-Williams KEM 400, flatted down to 3-5% sheen. I repainted my boat with that. Must be sprayed on...I used HVLP. Have heard good stuff about boat paint sold by Lock Stock and Barrel. Lots of boats wearing that stuff. |
