 What boat do I need?
Hey all,
I'm new to this forum, but I was hoping some guys could give me some advice. I currently have a backwater 25 hp Longtail mud motor. Its currently on a 1448 boat and runs horribly. (the weight of the motor just isn't working out on a small boat) My max speed I'm getting is about 14 mph (2 guys, no gear) and the boat is running deep (getting hung up in 4-6 inches of water. The river that I run is rocky and shallow- not a ton of mud.
Obviously I need a new boat, very badly, but the question is what size? I'm currently leaning towards an 1848 custom hull. Ive talked with uncle J's custom jons and have been looking at some of his stuff on here and he has me very very interested. HOW GOOD ARE HIS BOATS????
Will this be the perfect size for the motor that I currently have? We usually hunt 2 guys (200 lbs each), and 2 dogs (65lbs lab and 35 lbs Boykin spaniel)
If I get a custom hull and pony up the $$ I want a boat that I will be happy with for years to come!
Thanks everybody!

i'm leaning towards an 1848, bc I want the most boat for the money. Would that work with a 27hp Long tail?

As far as I know Uncle J isn't building boats anymore. When was the last time you talked with him?

I talked to Uncle J last week. He quoted me out a price and everything.

Re: What boat do I need?
Based on the reactions I'm guessing uncle J is the guy I want to build my boat. What size boat do I need? 1748 or 1848? I have a 27 hp backwater longtail.
Please help!
Speed is not my biggest concern. Running Very shallow is!

Re: What boat do I need?
1748 if you're staying with the 27 HP

Re: What boat do I need?
An extra foot isn't gona weigh that much more and long tails do better in longer boats. You won't regret the 18 footer. I run a 25 long tail on an 18x44 and it performs just fine. I've hit 21 mph in it going down river and will run 16 against the current.

I think you would be just fine in a 18x48.

Get an 18x48 if you've got plans to ever put a surface drive on it in the future. If you're going to use a longtail for the rest of your life, 16or17x48 would be ideal.
And make sure to get square chines and a normal transom.
