 New aluminum
What do they use to protect aluminum (glycol, oil, peanut shells?) when shipping. What could be in the "new" aluminum that could make paint and even an etching primer peel? Got a customer that the entire boat is peeling in big sheets.

No anchor profile and/or not enough acetone.

 Re: New aluminum
Best way to etch alum good is run over it with some kind of sandpaper and cover it well then take a strong degreaser like purple power and spray it on and let it foam white for a 5 min or so then wipe with thinner and you ready to go.
Like said above there is a light sheen of oil on all new flat sheets.
Some alum you get has paper between the sheets but most have nothing.

 Re: New aluminum
I've gotten some with some kind of coating on it before. Not sure what it was, but it had to be removed to weld on or it would make a mess.

 Re: New aluminum
Frog,
Since I am thinking this is boat in the other thread...
I believe it says that boat was painted. Not raw.
If so, could it be something with the paint that was on there or some sort of clear coat that is keeping it from bonding?
I had a similar peeling that happened when I painted over paint on another boat. On the boat the paint "was almost gone" as described in the other thread, and so I didn't sand it very much at all. very light scuffing.
I know that was paint and not GG, but just trying to help you sort it out.

 New aluminum
95% of paint failure is prep. 4% is application. 1% is the actual paint. And I've been in this business for over half my life.
You cannot get it too clean. Grease or wax will affect adhesion. Plus paint adheres mechanically so the rougher the surface the better.
