mud buddy motors and freddy king
why is there so much hate on mud buddy motors? just wondering. i've watched a lot of videos of freddy king roasting through flooded timber in Arkansas thrashing on them and they seem to hold up great. i'm just curious cause i read a lot of bad things about them on here. even if there cs is horrible whats up with the actual drive unit? they look good i've never had the chance to drive one and don't know anyone who has one so just throwing out these questions on here.

Re: mud buddy motors and freddy king
I have duals. They are the old sport motors going on 4 yrs with 300+ hours with no major prob. Yes their customer service is like watching paint dry. I ain't here to measure dicks but I don't think it's any more unreliable than the other brands. Their new V may be a different story.

Re: mud buddy motors and freddy king
My favorite Freddy king moment is him exclaiming how tough the excel boat is after they have to beat the nose out with sledge hammers to get to the winch. That's not tough. That's weak as hell. That boat is now fucked. Good job Fred. How many of you guys running excels keep two sledge hammers in the boat in canes you have to beat it back into shape?

Re: mud buddy motors and freddy king
I'll admit the guy is funny as hell but a total dumb ass ! You can tell the boat is sluggish as hell in the video ! That boat he's claiming is a bad moowchine is a horrible set up for timber . Wide and hardly a pointed bow ( bull nose ) . I like the look of the excel boat but with a lil research learned they are heavy and are trash. There is little to no chance I'll ever own anything other then a GT or PD !

Re: mud buddy motors and freddy king
Its basically the customer service. They hyper drives arent all that bad. Actually really comfortable to drive, less tiller torque than my gatortail and way less vibration. I will say you should probably stay away from excel boats. There is a reason freddy always carries so much shit with him. Thats the only way that boat will turn. I ride with a guy with the exact same boat and it skips like a rock when you go to put it in a hard turn if you dont set up the turn right. Its fun to drive and skip around in the summer time but i wouldnt have one come duck season. Also there is no such thing as a dry ride in an excel. If you are driving at anything over an idle you will get wet. Fun in the summer, not so much when its 30 degrees outside...

Re: mud buddy motors and freddy king
My opinion on things is GT, PD and GD have basically 2 model motors in 2 different HP options and they work very well and are super reliable. Mud buddy has or had about 10 different options to choose from. It's like they never perfect one thing before they have all ready moved onto another Model or project . Mud buddy has some great ideas I'll give them that but they don't fallow all the way through with things till after its released and people are having problems. You get what you pay for. Hopefully BOSS will correct Mud Buddy's issues but things seem to never change but hopefully they will get it right.

Re: mud buddy motors and freddy king
Hernaja1, I won't comment on the sport v or h because I have zero experience with them. The HD sport and LT frames are very well built. The major issues most seems to have are primarily engine related. I have a hunting friend that has put close to 900 hours on one of the first release mini frames with no problems. Don't recall the HD or the long tails having any more issues than gt or gd have had (never studied prodrive until the last couple years, so I won't comment there, either). I've got plenty of issues with their release of these sport motors, but to say they don't follow through until after release seems to be the case with the sport v only. They kept the H in the box, and sold it to boss to make better and release on their schedule. The super Longtail didn't have issues beyond it wasn't a huge seller and everyone said it was a decent frame. I even remember many conversations about "i wont have a bearing in the lower part of my longtail shaft, because itll fail, and wont get me home, while the bushing always will" How many times was that ever an issue in the mudbuddy, where the seal failed and the bearing disnt get someone home? Ive seen countless longtails (mb and gd) with many hours (over 1500) You get what you pay for? They all cost relatively the same, except for gd which is a bit cheaper. Maybe you don't like mb, and that's fine, but I don't exactly follow your logic. They all break. Including the new cast bracing on the gt lower. Didn't get fixed until AFTER people started having issues. It's fixed, and it's fine. Not saying it's junk. But that's one of your "super reliable" companies doing the same thing you talk down about mb for. Anyway, thought I'd at least point out a potential flaw or two in your logic for discussion's sake. Btw, I own a mb and a gtr sd, have put countless hours on gd and mb lt frames, and think they're all great frames (cept the gtr, as it is new to me and needs assembly so the jury is still out lol).

Re: mud buddy motors and freddy king
The motors have nothing to do with the builder ! Go look at any older model GT vs MB frame . GT won't have a spec of rust ,the MB definitely will especially if it's ben in salt water. I don't hate mud buddies. They are what they are. I don't think they are total junk they just seem to have issue after issue. Might be just because they have so many different models that it just seems they have that many issues ? My thought is if MB are so good then why does every one dog them ? Iv never owned one so don't have a say . If MB was so good wouldn't every owner brag about having one and wouldn't GT , PD, and GD owners wish they had one ? Isn't it usually the other way around MB owners switch to a PD or GT ?

Re: mud buddy motors and freddy king
I had a MB. It was a really nice unit. Had a bad streak with refurbished trims breaking and MB honored both of the old Thompsons and put it towards a mercury trim. No problem at all with CS on my end. I liked mine but wanted reverse.
Now I have a GTR and in 61hrs, had a trim break in half, and got a reverbished unit in return and now I can't keep those fukin allen heads in my reverse caliper. Tried blue and red loctite to no avail. Go figure.

Re: mud buddy motors and freddy king
They're not any better or worse than the other options. The percentage of owners happy with their rigs for what they use them for is probably very similar. Prior to finding this site, I had never heard of gatortail, so word of mouth wasn't as good with them. Gd, mb, and pd I had known about for years. Does that make the other better? Nope. Just mean gt wasn't necessarily the game changer either. They're all fine, and serve their intended purpose well. The number of different models doesn't speak to lack of quality, nor does it mean they're better. But only having 2 models should mean they've perfected everything about it, by your inferrence, and they havent. It isn't driver proof, nor is pd nor mb nor any of the others. They all have flaws, and they all have many things right about them. Mb chose to flood the market with different models, but that has only increased their market share. Good business tactic. They've also had some snafus with their business tactics. Still, their HD sport frames and longtails are as reliable as gt and Gd and anyone else makes, and have been from the beginning. There are motors and parts with every brand that break, and will be used as examples of "junk" by a fan or brand loyalist of a different brand. Yet something breaking on their favorite brand will usually get written off as inconsequential or not representative of the company or design. They ALL break. That is an indisputable fact. For various reasons. Saying one is better than the other can only be fact for specific situations (I want instant reverse, I want fpr, I want to operate the motor with one hand, etc). They are all equally reliable and equally able to break. The weak points might be different, but they exist.
Mb gets hammered here because this is largely a gt fan site, while that trend has changed recently to be even with the pd fans, Mb is not be considered equal here as a generality, so it is what it is. That doesn't make them an inferior motor. Plus, FK is a douche, and makes me not want to support mb, even though their products have NEVER left me stranded. People can say that about gt, pd, gd, etc, and that's fine. But people can say the opposite about all of them as well.

Re: mud buddy motors and freddy king
I will add if someone had a legitimate bad experience with whatever brand they had, and they feel like it's junk, so be it. But that's not representative of the large majority of people happy with their motors, and as such, doesn't make a brand junk. When a significant percentage of motors are crap, then the brand is junk. That doesn't apply to anything except for maybe dixie, which is out of business because of it.

Re: mud buddy motors and freddy king
My last motor was a gtr, now running the HD and no complaints here. I had more trouble with the gtr than with my mb. Mb problem was briggs related at that. They all have their pros and cons, calling shit junk and what not I think Dixie is deserving of that.

Re: mud buddy motors and freddy king
Anyone using this website or their own first hand knowledge as the basis for whether a manufacturer produces a satisfactory product is less than knowledgeable and I will leave it at that. This site is probably a sample size of 1% of all mudmotors sold and that espeically true for MB. The fact that MB gets more grief than the others on this site proves absolutely nothing other than the fact that the site is biased.
