The Hull: 1436 Open Floor (No Benches) {Make UNKNOWN} IMG_0717.JPG

Trailer: Homemade, but fits boat. Axle is just a little short

Motor: Medium Swamp Runner w/ 420CC Predator (Harbor Freight)

Blind: Banded Axe Blind w/ woodland camo pack

The Mission: Create a bad ass duck rig

What I've done so far:

1. I removed all the aluminum floor and yanked out all the old foam. It had at least 200 lbs of water logged foam, no wonder it sat so deep in the water :roll:

2. Used a wire brush to knock all the loose dirt off the inside and then shop vac'd it up.

3. Used paint stripping wheels for a grinder to remove all the paint and bottom coating (rhino liner) from the boat. [Took 17 wheels in total :cry: ]IMG_0782.jpg

4. Used Coat it to seal all the inside rivets. (Gator Gliding the bottom so that should seal them from the outside).

5. I used a cut off wheel to cut into the front deck i have piece of diamond plate I am going to use in order to make front and rear storage area lids.

6. Sand blasted the trailer, bought new fenders, primed it, painted it, and clear coated it. Also added new running boards and submersible lights. IMG_0831.JPG

What's to come for boat:

- Prime and paint the boat. Base coat: Olive Drab w/ brown, tan, and black saw grass stencils

- Put on the Gator Base and Gator Glide

- Adding (1) 15" Light Bar and 4 LED Cubes in the front and 2 LED Cubes in the back

- Swamp Camo Hydro Turf for the inside

- 2500 lb Agri Supply Winch (Mounting this will be interesting help is appreciated)

- New Wiring and Switch Panel, New bilge pump, new courtesy lights

- New 13" Seat Pedestals & Swivels

- (2) Tempress Hi Back Shadow Grass Camo seats

- New Nav Lights

- Adding Backwater Weld on Pods to the rear (Also going to be interesting)

- New Battery trays w/ new deep cycle and starting battery


Whats to come for Motor:

- KN Style Air Filter

- NR Racing High Performance Loop Header

- Gas Tank Vacum Air Filter

- Bicycle Brake Lever (To replace SR Racing Throttle... that thing is a POS)

- New Camo for Motor

Whats to come for Trailer:

- Adding new Rims and Tires

- Adding 1" Wheel Spacers to correct offset caused by smaller axle.

I know this is extensive but I want everyone to see whats going on so that they can add to their rig and make it better as well as give me suggestions. Ill keep this updated with new pics and info. Thanks for looking!

I admire that you have the nuts to do all this work yourself. Alot of guys on here don't like the Thai style kits, I dont mind them. I am building a homemade go devil style motor because I want something with a shorter shaft. Good luck with your rig

It's simple. get a mud motor. shoot ducks in the face.

That will be a big project but should pretty pretty sweet when you get done.

As far as the winch mounting, I have a bracket with a tube that my spud pole goes through. I made a winch mount with a tube of the same OD as my spud pole welded to the bottom. The winch can then slide in the spud pole bracket. It can rotate to face the direction you are pulling.

I will get a picture and post it. Worked out really well.

That'll hunt. You don't need a winch in the boat, too heavy! Put some slick bottom on it and let'er eat.

Thanks guys appreciate the kind words and advice. Float pods are supposed to be in today so once I get the boat to the welding shop and get them welded on ill post a pic. Most people use the beaver tail float pods, but the guys at backwater are super nice and it only takes 4 days to receive them instead of 3 weeks + they are the same price and size soooo... (Something to keep in mind if you wanna order some). Alot of the big ticket items i.e. Hydro turf, LED Lights, and Gator Glide will be in by this weekend so I'll have some pretty sweet pictures to post up. Again any advice is greatly appreciated. I love restoring boats its just a passion of mine. In regards to the winch I realize it may be overkill especially with the gator glide, but some of the lakes i hunt get partially drained in the winter and if you get stuck on a sand bar no amount of tugging will pull you off unless you've got another boat so being able to hook to a cypress tree would be convenient. Thanks again!

So I got the new float pods in and my 15" Light Bar and 3 Sets of LED Cubes. Can't wait to get these babies welded on! Thats all thats holding me up right now.... can't weld alum or I'd be half way through this project.

So I took the pods to the aluminum welder here in town... $300 to weld them on which is more than I paid for the pods, but there isn't anyone else to do it so I let him go ahead. He sent me these pics. Hopefully I'll have her back tomorrow. Also put this snorkel ram on the air box of my motor, just for looks but does allow a little more air to get to the filter. Much more to come!

OK so I got her back from the welder and the pods look nice, He also used a plasma cutter to cut the lids for my front and rear hatches so I'm happy about that because my diamond blade wouldn't even scratch that thick stuff. Had some spare time so decided to go ahead and put the Gator Base on since you have to wait 72 hr for it to cure before you can apply the Gator Glide, It was pretty easy to work with I did 4 THIN coats and it took right around 4 hours including the time to tape everything off and wipe it down with acetone, It took 2/3 of a half gallon to do what you see in the picture. Its really starting to shape up and by next sunday I should have the hydro turf in and maybe have all the LEDs wired up. Thanks for following my little build guys. So with the gator glide finished it was finally time for some paint. I put the new foam under the floor (DOW Styrofoam brand, its the blue one) and I put the aluminum floor back in taped off a few spots that were getting hydro turf and then Primed the whole boat with self etching primer and layed down a base coat of Olive Drab followed by a camo pattern. Turned out great! Also managed to get the front storage compartment lid on and test fit a small section of hydro turf! I did however make one mistake. I layed down the gator glide before paint thinking i could tape up the 2 1/2" strip down the bottom side of the boat.... well painters tape won't stick to gator glide so i was forced to spray the best paint line i could, but good news is paint doesn't stick to it either. I took acetone and removed the paint from the bottom strip and I am gonna come back over that strip with one more coat of gator glide to freshen it up because the acetone dulled the GG down a bit. So even though I work 12 hours a day I drank a few red bulls and managed to get a little work done before my eyes got heavy. Got the front little patch of Hydro Turf glued down got the winch all mounted up. Had to use a 4x4 block cut down to mount it. Temporarily mounted the light bar, still have to mount the LED cubes. Got All the lights mounted in the front, still got two cubes to mount in the rear. Gives you and idea of how everything is mounted and secured.

I just picked up a 1436 Alumacraft Jon and am trying to decide what motor and mud motor kit.

The 420 Predator seems to be a good fit for your boat. Are you happy with the performance ??

Ok, She's almost finished. Hydroturf went in good after having to order another piece (ripped the first one) best advice i can give is to let that glue all but dry and lay it real slow. The seats are tempress, and man do they sit good and are very sturdy, not much left at this point, I've just gotta wire the new kill switch mount the rear hatch lid, put in the gun rack and mount the operators seat. Then throw my blind back on and shes ready for duck season next weekend. Thanks to everyone that followed this little build, I've got way more money in it that I could ever get back out but it was fun and its gonna be even more fun out on the water. Ill post some more pics from opening day with it on the trailer and in the water, also gotta get my fancy trailer rims put on, the guy at the tire store laughed at me but oh well. :roll:

Btw good job on the boat looks awesome. I had a 1640 Jon I wanted to build kinda like that a couple years but then I decided to get a big ole useless sd rig. :lol:

Nothing like DIY! I started with a 1436 and an 18 HP GD LT. Great rig, could have used more freeboard, lucky not to have sunk it. Light and easy to hide! Great two man rig. You have produced a deluxe ducker! Have fun!

Looks awesome! U don't need an expensive rig to hunt.
Light boats with low hp have their faults and big boats with higher hp have their problems aswell.
For example load carrying capacity. On small boats.
And when you get a large boat stuck like I mean really stuck it's a pain to get it out.
