I have one its 18'x48" with extended front deck and no seat. I'm running 35hp long tail on it. They are heavy boats but very well built thinking about cutting float pods out of stearn cause they in way with long tail it has foam in floor so won't be completely withou

You mean it doesn't make it float higher or carry a load better? WTF!!

Decoys float as well. That doesnt mean the more you put in your boat the higher it will sit. If that was the case i know a guy whos hull would not touch the water.

Foam will only help if you start to sink or submerged. If it gets soaked then its an extra anchor in your boat you cant use.

In my opinion if you have insurance you Probably dont need foam. Its just lost storage space.

Plus foam will not prevent the boat from sinking. The boat will still float actually but vertically in the water. But that is still a life saver if your in the middle of a lake with no PFD with in reach. I wear mine almost all the time.

I have a 1744 its nothing fancy its built okay. I have had mine for 3 season got some dents in the bottom. On the 52" wide models it says they have 5 longitudinal braces. What they dont tell you is that on a skinnier boat they have less. I thought I was getting a 44" wide with 5 braces but it only has 3. For us in the midwest there arent a whole lot of options so It s a option for more of a true mudboat than a crimped bottom boat. For the size they are somewhat heavy but still run good. Its a good marsh boat. The fit and finish isn't great like you would find with a custom or semi custom builder or smaller shop. they are cookie cutter production boats. If you do get something narrower than 52 see about having 5 braces instead the 3 like mine. If i had to do it over it would be a tossup if I would go the same route. I like phowler but their prices have gone up quite a bit the past few years eventhough metal prices have been falling the past 5 years. Overall I am happy with the boat. Watch out on the flat front bow. the winch post was set a little too low and this caused my boat to constantly bounce and flex where the roller touched. It ended up cracking. I ended up putting flat short bunks on the winch post to spread the weight and keep it from cracking again.

I have owned an 1852 for 3 years. We don't have much for obstructions, so the lighter the better. My research was that this boat was lighter than most with being .100 aluminum.
Boat rigged with a modded 35. With gator glide on bottom.
Pretty fast boat runs 27 with decoys/gear 1 hunter -- add a guy only drops about 1 mph. In the hard mud bottom marshes I run will outperform GD, Gtrax, Prodigy. Have run all 3 plus the alweld. Alweld is faster and drafts far less water.

I have the same negatives - Finish okay. Gun box sucks.
Trailer from dealer POS. I don't believe the foam in the floor has taken on water, nut don't know for sure.

If I had to do over, I would get the mod vee front for rougher water....would also really research phowler vs this boat. I'm looking for lightest boat -- I hunt by myself sometimes and at 55 pushing out when you are stuck can be a challengE in the hard bottom marshes I hunt.

Hern - I appreciate your opinion...but my statement is not based on "I think's"....it is based on actual testing of boats on the marshes I hunt.
Performance for me is not all about speed....as for speed there really is not a whole lot of difference....1-2 mph.....where I hunt that equates to about 30 seconds less run time.
I have had MY exact motor on the boats noted.....not a similar motor.....the same motor!!! The alweld performs better for my application a hard marsh bottom and I noted that. I need a boat that drafts minimally....I don't run into underwater obstructions...we don't have it. I need a boat that is strong enough and draft less for straight runs...I don't turn a lot high speed so the square chimes are not a big deal for me.
Our bottoms may have 1-2 inches of soft mud....underneath that is hard enough you cannot dig in....it's a unique situation.
Hern, respectfully -- I do know what I'm talking about as I have run the boats with the same EXACT MOTOR on the marshes I hunt and for my purpose it is better--you can believe what you want to believe --- I really don't care.

Yes pretty damn close ! My point was the difference would not even be noticeable between 2 boats with the same dimensions , chine and motor.

Understand. With these hard bottoms 2-3 inches makes a huge difference.....
