Just bought a new hobart 210mvp and it was delivered Wednesday. Once I save a little money I'm going to get a spoolgun and the appropriate fixings for aluminum. What are some things you experienced guys can tell me about the Learning curve that goes with the transition from steel to aluminum? Im a pretty good steel welder and have successfully done some tig work on stainless. Never messed with aluminum. I want to build a boat just to see if I can build one better than an Excel for cheaper. I hate the sound of the brand and everyone where I live thinks they are the best gosh darn thing since the pocket pussy.

Nobody ever follows me. Except my dog.

This blew up. I was in Tapatalk trying to get out of the window that showed me the active users. In the midst of me finger fuckin my phone screen I followed like 13 people before it left. And as for all the questions, hey, I'm fuckin weird. We all know that.

For the record I'm not liking the new Tapatalk app update. When I open it, it goes straight to the people tab, my fat fingers end up following more people, I've also learned how to unfollow people. Just click the (-) by their name. Or if you want to follow click the (+) by your name. Only works if your in the people tab as far as u know now. App updates kick ass. Not.

Get some scrap 5086 and 5052 and some 5356 wire and practice is all I can say. It's not hard at all if you know how to weld.

5356 wire is not recommended for the smaller machines, I have been told that does not do well in the smaller guns like my spool mate 100. Was told to stay with 4043.

Might want to stock up on aluminum sheeting before the price increase. Due to Ford and GM going to aluminum bodies, we heard aluminum from Alcoa is going to raise its prices. Heard this from a Alcoa employee.

The hobart spool runner 100 recommends .030 5356

I'm not sure which measure you refer to as small welders. If your talking amps or Litterally physical dimensions. The 210, power wise is the second biggest mig machine hobart makes. The Ironman 230 is the next and biggest model

Be careful what you wish for Jake and make sure it's something you really want to do. I'm in the middle of a build and I hope I never have to do this again. I'd rather be punched in the face every morning when I wake up for the next year than do this shit again.

On a serious note I am interested in how it goes. I steel weld pretty well and have to for at least a month or two every year. I have never welded aluminum, but am interested in maybe buying a welder like you have and giving it a shot. Keep us up on the successes and failures, and good luck with it.

Thanks guys. Once I'm done adding the custom touches to my boat and building my dad a smoker I'll be buying the spool gun to see how it turns out.

Aluminum likes more amps than steel; if the Hobart 210 is a 210 Amp machine, you should be OK. You'll need to use 100% Argon gas vs. what you're likely using for steel (80% Argon and 20% CO2). is a great resource.

Post subject:  Re: Building boats

75/25 isn't gonna work if the 25% is CO2, You'll need 100% argon. If your base metals is 5052 or 5086 I'd stay away from 4043 filler as it's not an approved filler metal for these materials. If you do seem to have a problem with heat you can use a 90/10 or 75/25 argon/helium mix and that will help with the wetting out of the weld and the penetration.
