I'm in the process of replacing my transom on a 1982 Landau. It's 48 wide at the bottom and 68 at the top. I'm getting it ready for my new swomp lite 23. I replaced the two layers of 3/4 ply with a 2x12, for a little more reinforcement. The transom had a couple pieces of aluminum angle in the top corners that were through bolted through the transom and through the side of the hull. I'm not sure if they are necessary to put back. I already have about 16 through bolts in the transom locking it into the hull and support ribs from the floor to the transom as well. Has anyone replaced a transom that had the angles there? I don't see them as being critical since there won't be any flex in the back corner. Thoughts? |

Yes the corners are necessary, we also reinforce the top of transom with a piece of angle Iron. Running clear across top of transom. Picture is how I reinforced my 1648 Alumacraft so I could run a Moded MB BD 45. Working on its seventh seasons with out issiues. |

Thanks. Yea the angles in the corner were corroded, but I'll go ahead and make some new ones. They don't look necessary, but it's easy to replace. I got my hands on some high strength epoxy, stuff that makes jb weld look like elmers glue. I used that on both sides of the hull, which reinforced it as well. |

So you plan on doing some reinforcing of the transom with jbweld? Instead of real welding? Oh boy..... |

I really don't see any difference in what I said and what you said if you are in fact planning on putting jbweld on the back of your boat. |

Wood does not belong in a transom. I hope you didn't use treated wood either. |

Haha...alright thanks for your input. It was helpful...you do realize there are high strength epoxies that not only act as a protective coating, but also provide strength and rigidity? They literally use epoxy coatings on the outside of space vehicles. Maybe I wasn't clear in what I said. I coated both sides of the transom with it. This patched up some holes, prevents corrosion, and makes the metal portion of the transom more rigid (i.e. More strength). Everything else is through bolted. I'm not bracing anything with job weld, that'd be dumb, although on the industry side of epoxy they do make products that will bond just as good as welds, do so at a lighter weight and be more cost effective. |
