Post subject:  Remote steer swap out?

Currently have a custom made 1848 with a prodrive tiller handle. I used it almost exclusively for duck hunting until now. It is going to be my only boat which will be used for hunting and fishing. I love my rig but was thinking of going to a gator tail and remote steering for ease of operation. I like the full power reverse but it is not necessary for my needs. The convenience of instant reverse would probably better suit me now. Also have longer runs than in the past for fishing now and thought the remote steer would be nice . I found a used, remote steer, gator tail on a 1756 Alweld flat bottom. It's a hell of a deal. I am not against a factory built, .100 gauge boat, but i really like my current boat. How much trouble/cost would it be to take the steering console out of the Alweld and put it into my current boat? Was thinking of possibly doing that, putting prodrive on alweld and selling that rig. Any opinions?

You will need to remove the wiring control harness, (master cylinder for reverse if it is foot actuated hydraulic), throttle and control cable, steering lines, and helm. Console is up to you; but de rigging and re rigging is going to be the most time consuming part.

Just finishing up doing this. It's not terrible. I bought the parts separate and ordered the small conversion kit (wiring harness, hydraulic pedal, and some connections from GT). I bought the throttle from ebay, steering wheel from amazon, console locally, and the hydraulic steering system from fore and aft marine. I'm right at $1100 for getting it done. Wiring gave me a little trouble because GT failed to tell me about a grey wire that needed to be spliced in, but its all good now.
