Hi guys, I'm in the market for a new trailer and just had a nearby dealer put a hold on one for me. It is a yacht club galvanized trailer. The weight capacity of the trailer is 1500lbs which seemed light to me. I run a Phowler 1852 extreme (guessing around 800lbs), hard-side Phowler blind (guessing 300lbs), a Mud Buddy 55mag (300lbs). That puts me at 1400lbs right there. I typically load my boat with around 8 dozen decoys and gear for myself and a couple of buddies.. I feel like I will be well over the 1500lb capacity. What is the capacity of your guys's trailers? If I put a higher load range tire on the trailer, will I be ok? My current trailer has brand new load range D tires on it, I could swap them out onto the new trailer before I sold my old trailer... I talked to the guy at the boat dealer and he said if I went with a higher capacity trailer it would beat my boat to death...

Got a 2500 lb axle under mine. Boat not beat to death, and my boat with gear and motor isn't 1200.

I couldn't see how it would ride THAT much rougher than a 1500lb axle... I think I'm going to go with at least the 2,000lb trailer... any more opinions??

The trailer weight limit sometimes is based on the trailer not the axle.

You need to inquire on the axle.

Also, the weight limit INCLUDES the weight of the trailer.

I would not put the load you are talking about on what I think is the axle on that trailer.

Had the Yacht Club trailer with 1500 lbs axle. Bent the axle driving down the shitty LA, TX, and MS roads. My guess is that it is the square tube (mine was), which you don't want either until you get to the bigger axles. Burnt up a couple of tires until could get it replaced. The bend was almost undetectable, but it was there. Needed a straight edge to see it. Tires went in less than 100 miles.

I would want a 2500 min axle , and probably a 3500 axle to carry the load you have. I have a 3500 on my current trailer. Replaced the bent one on the other trailer with a 2500. The cost for the bigger axle should be relatively minor. You can buy the whole new axle for $150 bucks.

The tire part of your thought process is important, but it is not the critical piece. It is all about the axle, then the trailer itself, then the tires. Good radial tires are a plus though, and again will save you money in the long run.

You always want more head room not less. If you are having to calculate the weight of your decoys, you are on the wrong page to start with.

You put a load in that boat and start bouncing down shitty roads and over potholes, and you will wish you had spent the extra money.

I put a lot of miles on my trailer driving across GA, MS, LA, and TX, so my needs may be a little different than yours, but I would still say go big. It doesn't/shouldn't cost that much more.

Money is definitely not a worry with a boat trailer. I want to make sure I get something that will hold up and that I can use for a long time... As long as you guys don't think it will cause any issues for my boat, I think I will go with the 2500lb axle. Thanks again for the feedback!

get a heavy duty trailer with 3500# axle and have no worries. a dual axle trailer ain't a bad thing either if you are hauling a pig of a boat.

oh, and get some good welded on side boards to keep the boat from sliding off.

being broke down on the side of the road during hunting season is gonna suck.
